deleting posts

Are ordinary users permitted to delete their own posts and threads? I seem unable to.

Nope.
You can post it, but you just can't be trusted to delete it. :)
Actually, I think the reason for that is if someone deletes a thread they started, it also deletes everyone else's replies, and that can lead to database indexing problems.
At least I seem to recall hearing that mentioned a time or two.

Just PM me if you need a post deleted and I'll be happy to take care of it. As a rule, I delete any 'double-taps' I see, on sight.

If you made a post and decided to not say that...
Edit your post out and leave a period . in the field and submit.
Still have a post but it will say nothing.
Then a mod may later wander through and finish cleaning it off.
