Can a couple of you please post pics of your storage boxes/lockers where you safely store primers and powder?

I'm sorry I don't have any pictures, but if you can imagine a shelf in my reloading room, with some boxes and bottles sitting on it, well...you've pretty much got it.

Do you have 50 lbs. of powder at one time and want to keep them in a fire/explosion proof chest?

If you're just talking about the average reloader's stash, a shelf is fine. Maybe in a closet with a lock on the door if you're worried that small kids might get access to them. (...and might sneak in and load your cartridges to unsafe pressure levels or something. :confused: )

Like the others above, I store mine in factory containers on a set of shelves by my loading bench.

All you need is an area that isn't constantly above 80 degrees and humid.

Ideal would be in an area with dry air and stable temps in the 50's-60's, even 70's is ok.

Also- DO NOT lock them up air tight. If you have a fire you want a pile of rapidly burning powder and primers, not a cartridge that is lit by 1,000 primers with a 5 pound powder charge!

On almost three wooden shelves in my reloading room. I have 5 or 6 8lb containers on pallets on the floor. My primers are on a wooden shelf by themselves. Never got around to building a wooden cabinet , even after forty years. My bad.

I was keeping my powder on a shelf above the bench like most others but i have now put it in a filing cabinet behind the door in my reloading room. Still trying to decide where to keep the primers.

On a dry and even tempurature area of my home. Not locked up in a safe or enclosed cabinet. I buy my powder in 8 lb jugs and don't wish to make a bomb.

I keep my primes on a shelf. But my powders are in a one inch thick wooden box with one inch thick dividers. Not a lot of UK shooters know this but this is now obligatory here. It's a safety thing, apparently.

My primers, all 20K of them, are safely LOCKED in my gun safe, which weighs 700lbs and is securely lagged into the framing of my house. Can't be too careful with primers you know, they are now worth more than the guns!!!!:D

Seriously, they are on a shelf, in the loading room, like everyone else. BTW, anyone have any primers for sale? :scrutiny:

Looking at the 8 lb containers of powder, I have a question. Do you move smaller amounts of powder from the kegs to 1 lb canisters of the same powder for ease of use or do you pour directly from the large keg?

Honestly, store the stuff where you'll need it. I keep whatever I'm using on a shelf next to the press. I've got a little more stashed away in a closet. It isn't dangerous stuff. Have you ever burned any smokeless powder? Try it sometime... okay try it outside, but try it out. The gas can in your garage and the gas stove are much more dangerous critters than a few or a few hundred pounds of powder.

Primers might be a little more dangerous, but with supplies the way they are who has more than a couple mil on hand anyway? ;) I've burned them accidentally before in my burn barrel and never noticed it.

They way I look at it, if my house catches on fire and the gun room gets hot enough to set primers off or burn powder, all is lost anyway. I've got bigger problems than worrying about the slight bit of added fuel to the fire.

I've about had a gut full of "I don't need to stock up for bad times.....I've got a gun and I'll just take your stuff..." Well, I've got guns and ammo too. Evidently more than you because I can make more.

Primers are packaged well enough that I'm really not too concerned about them. You'd have to get a pretty severe blow to set them off inside those boxes.

I've got probably somewhere between 12-15k right now. Haven't counted and don't care. They're in a drawer or on top of the filing cabinet.

Now in the real world: In the original packages, on a shelf in a wooden cabinet I made in the garage which has a few holes in the door covered with screen wire for ventilation and pressure release and to blow dry chem through to snuff fires. And the cabinet is nowhere near any sources of ignition. The fire extinguisher is near the entry door on the far side of the garage from the storage. And I have a smoke detector mounted over the cabinet for an early warning. Other flammables (oils, solvents, finishes, etc.) are stored in the same area in different cabinets.

I bought enough 1# containers of my preferred powder to "decant" the 8# jug into full 1# containers with the manufacturers label unaltered.

i store most all of my powder and primes in small brass containers topped by a chunk of lead to keep them from harm

Powder just burns. It doesn't go "boom."

Unless you have it sealed in a pressure vessel of some sort.

In bottles, on a shelf is FINE.

Steve, Do you keep track of the lot number off the 8# jug incase there is a recall on the particular powder, that way you know what lot it is from?

As stated before, poweder does not 'explode' or produce a violent reaction when burnt in an unconfined manner, primers however are have a very violent reaction when they are detonated. A fire proof safe will turn into a sealed vessel if it is heated by a fire and the gasket expands to seal the door. Then you have the possibility to have a big BOOM should the powder ignite (possibly from primers stored inside)
