Anyone had their Vaquero hammers swapped out for Bisley hammers or looked into whether or not it's possible? I think i read somewhere that it is "legal" in SASS to do so but can't find any info to verify this.
I want to change out Janets'(my wife) Vaquero hammers for her but need to know if it's possible before i buy the Bisley hammers.
Thanx, Jim

A hammer swap makes necessary a change to the trigger and grip frame. A viable alternative would be the New Model Super Blackhawk hammer, which is very nearly the same profile as the Bisley. I'm not sure that it would be a drop-in or near drop-in for the New Vaquero...but it's a straight swap on New Model Blackhawks. Try one of the Ruger forums and ask your questions. Those guys are more up on the guns than I am, and they can point you in the right direction.

READ THE RULES!
From the SASS Shooter's Handbook on hammers:
"Bisley style revolver hammers may only be used when mated with a Bisley style grip frame.
Ruger Super Blackhawk/Montado style revolver hammers (i.e. lowered and widened hammers) are acceptable on both adjustable and fixed sight model revolvers."
From the SASS Wire on installation of Montado hammers:
"Well I have 3 OMV with Montado hammers and they drop right in without any modification needed. The old and new vaquero hammers are identical on the business end of things (I also have 3 actual montados and a pair of NMV with montado hammers).

Thanx 1911 TUNER and Jim,that is the info i needed. I have what i need to work with now.
Jim,
"Bisley style revolver hammers may only be used when mated with a Bisley style grip frame."
Is this to say that the Bisely frame will fit the NMV ? Gosh, janet would love it if i could make this alteration for her. She really wanted Bisley Vaqueros but couldn't afford 'em.

Hanged if I know, I shoot a Colt and a Cimarron. (Traded an Eyetalian automatic and gave boot for the Colt, the Cimarron is a LOOOONG story.)
You could sign up on the SASS Wire and ask around. People these days talk about how many "sets" of guns they have and a lot of them tinkered up to the limit.

The old Ruger Bisleys are based on the Blackhawk frames, and the grip frame won't readily swap onto the smaller New Vaqueros. The good news is that Ruger has introduced a New Bisley Vaquero built on the smaller frame. Unsure if Ruger will sell the grip frame and trigger as components, but the aftermarket may offer the conversion parts.
Try Ruger first.
