April '09 handgun match!

Well, we had a pretty good turn out for the rifle rimfire match, and some requests for a handgun match, so here is, it is very simple:
For rimfires:
1) Print out THIS TARGET (.PDF file) http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/TPHaller/50ft_Target_865.pdf
2) Shoot 5 shots at 30 feet (10 yards) with the rimfire pistol of your choice and in the style of your choice.
3) Post your results along with a description of the pistol and style.
For centerfires:
1) Print out THIS TARGET (.PDF file) http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/TPHaller/50ft_Target_865.pdf
2) Shoot 5 shots at 30 feet (10 yards) with the centerfire pistol of your choice and in the style of your choice.
3) Post your results along with a description of the pistol and style.
For both centerfire and rimfire, include this info in your entry:
Caliber
Make/ Model of Gun
Position
Conditions (especially indoor/ outdoor)
Bullet Weight
Factory or Handload Ammo
The idea is that we can have a real comparison of skill under relatively consistant circumstances.
Scopes will have a seperate catagory than irons.
(if any of you feel it needs to be a longer range [probably 15 yards], feel free to say so, i will modify the rules)
I hope everyone has FUN with this!

Printed some off and am gonna give it a few shots. :)
Not having participated in one of these before, what are the rules, and is it open to anyone? Reloads or factory? Anything else I need to know?

Rules are simple, they are above. Just shoot, take a pic, and post it. if you don't have a way to post it, PM me, and i will give you a address to send it to, i can post it for you.
I would think that reloads are fine.

Can i use my ruger charger for this? It is a pistol... but has a bipod and scope so in not sure if it counts....
Help?
Otherwise ill just use my glock.
Also, how my many rounds do we use?
gvnwst
April 1, 2009, 04:29 PM
A charger will be fine, but stay away from using the bipod. If there are enough people/complaints, we will have a scoped catagory too.
Ill edit the OP to include some more rules.
BTW, you can submit as many targets as you want per gun you chose, but try to keep it down. (like, if you get ____ score, post it, and then later in the month get a better score, you can post that, but don't post every try you do)

Good shootin'.
gus--if you have photobucket or a similar photo hosting site, use that, copy the link, and instert as a pic. If not, upload the images (i think it is called "manage attachments") and they will be thumbnails that we can enlarge.

There isn't a 10 yard line at the ranges I belong to but we do have a 15 yard lines. I also shot six instead of five :eek::o- "feeling lucky? Punk" or something like that...

Ruger New Vaquero, 45 Colt, 255 grain home cast LEE RF bullet, juiced to 915 fps (average) with a slightly off the reservation load of SR 4756. Winchester LP primers, a cyclinder's worth on each target.
I'll try to post a compliant target later. ;)

Well, here is my rimfire entry, it is kinda bad....:
http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo64/gvnwst/100_2116.jpg
Caliber: .22lr
Make/ Model of Gun: walther P22 3.4". The type with the worst sights of any handgun i have ever used.
Position: Standing, unsupported.
Conditions (especially indoor/ outdoor): outdoor, zero noticable wind, 70 degrees
Bullet Weight: 40gr
Factory or Handload Ammo: can you handload .22lr?
I got 36/1x on that one i think.
Now, at one point, i was getting really frustrrated, i couldn't get all the shots to stay in the same spot, and after only getting one in the 10 ring, i used a 6th round on a target......just put the muzzle to the target, and...
http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo64/gvnwst/100_2118.jpg
Does this count as a perfect score?:D
Then i shot this target at 5yd, and suddenly i could get most of them where i wanted....(normally i was having groups down and right of the bull, any idea what i am doin wrong?)

I downloaded the targets but I do not know where they went. Cyber space I guess. The photos have a high resoluttion 2760X3080 or something like that probably too big to post HELP. I put them on photobucket but do not know how to post link. They will not attach to an email are they too big? Can I regular mail these targets to someone. Nice shooting there gus! One thing i notice, are there 6 holes in the .22lr target? (not that it matters, you have them all in/touching the X ring) Good going with a 50/5x!

Yes I left the rules at home but had the targets so I fired six to be safe. There are six shots also on the centerfire target. I am going to try and post the open sighted targets also.http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/gus3836/DSC00005.jpg model 624 190gr WC 6" barrel two hand standing

Hi, folks -
I finally got a chance to get to the range today, so I threw in a few of these targets.
For centerfire, I shot my iron-sighted DAO 4" 686 revolver 2-handed, unsupported, obviously shot double action.
For rimfire, I shot my 1951 6" K-22 (also iron sights), single action, 1-handed unsupported (bullseye style). I have less trigger time with my K-22 and even less shooting single action, so I was happy with the result, though I gotta work on the sight adjustment.
Apologies for the cropped scans, but my scanner is acting odd today, so I was happy to get what I got. Basic idea comes through.
Target #1. Centerfire
4" S&W 686, rendered DAO. 2-handed unsupported double action.
Ammo = 2.9 grains bullseye + 148 grain HBWC
5 shots @ 0.52" c-c
http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp239/becke016/GunsTargets/April686.jpg
Target #2. Rimfire
6" S&W K-22. 1-handed, single action (bullseye style).
Ammo = Federal 714
5 shots @ 0.70" c-c

Came across this thread this morning. As I was going to the range to practice with my carry gun (Charter Arms "Undercover" 2" barreled .38 special, I printed a handful of the targets on heavy card stock and took them along. I shot at several targets with different ammo, but the handloads I use for carry gave the best accuracy at 10 yards.
Posting my record target - not gonna win the match, but not terribly bad with a 2" revolver at 10 yards either.
Ammunition was 158 grain Hornady XTP Hollow point bullet, Remington-Peters brass cases, 4.8 grains Vihta Vuori N340 powder, Federal small-pistol (non match) primers.
This proved to be the most effective. I had a better group with some 158 grain Berry's plated bullets with Bullseye powder, but they all keyholed badly so the individual bullet holes weren't easily distinguished and I didn't keep the target.
Gotta try to borrow a .22 so I can shoot the rimfire match now.
Oh yes, forgot, 2 handed, unsupported - indoor range.

Here is my stab at this for the rimfire catagory. I did mine a little different to test my abilities with some added pressure thrown in. I gave myself only 1 try for each of the following: scoped/supported, scoped, unsupported, irons/supported, and irons/unsupported from 30 feet. The supported ones were resting the Ruger on a sandbag and the others were free standing with a 2 hand hold. I only took 3 sighter shots with the scope to move the group over 1/2 inch to get them near the bull. I should have done the same with the iron sights but didn't. I haven't shot this gun that much and it has been at 25 yards. I must say that shooting with the scope is very nerve racking experience because your brain is trying to compensate for every little movement. I had to bail out on the trigger pull a couple of times and my breathing got out of whack. Give me irons! The funny part was when I went to remove the scope to do the open sight shooting, I noticed the scope was loose as a goose. The 3 screws that hold the base to the gun were all free. :cuss: It had me puzzled while I was shooting them offhand because I have done alot better in the past. I ran into a loose sight problem while trying the 30-30 lever competition yesterday, it was shooting some amazing groups at 100, I just couldn't get all 3 on the paper plate. :cuss: I bought this gun used along with a used scope from the same store. I have no idea how many rounds are through it and it doesn't lock the slide back on the last shot???

What is the final talley?
Sorry for not posting sooner....
I have the scores like this:
Centerfire class:
gus3836 50-4x
MrBorland 50-4x
Justsaymo 49-2x
KSCCHTrainer 49-2x
Rimfire class:
Judah Ben-Hur 50-5x (i only counted your best target)
gus3836 50-5x
jackstinson 50-3x
MrBorland 49-0x
gvnwst 36-1x
So, we have ties in both classes, how do you guys suggest we break them? Then again, it might come down to rules, gus3836, i only counted your 5 best shots, so technically speaking you had 1 more chance on each target, so.....?
Also, if anyone would like to contest the scores, feel free to do so, i am not sure i did them all right.
