I read where some one said (gun magazine) that a Colt 45 round is the same as the Colt 45 long colt. Is this true?

The designation ".45 Long Colt" originated amongst military personnel to prevent confusion with the smaller .45 Schofield. It has become a widely used alternative name for the cartridge, and adopted by Colt for use in designating the chambering in its own Single Action Army revolvers.

madcratebuilder didn't say it explicitly, but yes, .45 Colt and .45 Long Colt are the same thing. In fact, I think the Long Colt name doesn't officially exist, although it's the one that's really used.

Something interesting...
Colt may not have ever called it the Long Colt, because Colt had only one spec for .45 (Colt did spec .32, .38 and .41 Short and Long Colt cartridges).
However, apparently ammo makers -- big-time ones like Remington -- made up a Short Colt spec and produced .45 Short Colt ammo.
From Elmer Keith in Sixguns:
Some newcomers to the game claim there is no such animal, but if they had shot the short variety that Remington turned out in such profusion before, during and after World War I they would see there was some basis in referring to the .45 Colt as the .45 Long.
This is a .45 Colt next to a .45 Short Colt. There may never have been a .45 Long Colt, officially, but...

Colt uses the term .45 Long Colt Caliber on their web page.

I think you are confusing the op unnecessarily. What are the odds of encountering WWI ammo? Besides, it's a straight case that headspaces on the rim. Whats the harm if its short?

the unofficial "long colt' designation came when the army was using hte schofield revolver alongside the 1873 peacemaker. Had to have a way for the nitwits in suplly to EASILY designate between the cartridges so everybody would get the correct cartridge for their issue pistol.

there is a lot more to the story than this. there were several different variations of the 45 from 45 colt, 45 shofield, 45 gap, 45 acp and 454casuall, and 45 short. Long was a something the U.S military started to use to make sure the correct ammo was used. Some how through the years unofficially the 45 colt was given the name long colt. though i have never seen a cartridge stamped 45 long colt. i have seen many stamped 45 colt. it is true if you go to colts web site today and search revolvers you will now see them call the 45 Long Colt. As far as a manufacture i believe they are the only manufacture to have called the 45 colt 45long colt.

ok as far as what you can use. if you have a 454 casual you have a made. As a 454 casuall is just a huge round. However you can use 45 colt, 45 shofield, 45 short. In a 45 colt you can use a 45 shofield and if you can find it a 45 short. you can not reverse it though as the 45 colt is too long to put in a gun that takes a shofield
