Well, after weeks of research and reading these forums I have purchased a CZ 75B. I hope to receive it in a few days. Any tips or suggestions about anything special that needs to be done when I get it out of the box? I thought I read somewhere on this board that CZ's guns are heavily covered in grease and might need a "kerosene" bath. Eventually, I plan to customize it with some grips. Now I need to find some ammo in preparation for the big day.

Check the CZ web site as to assorted factory grips. Changed set on mine to Houge grips,(goog looking, but a bit bulky), then changed to colored rubber factory. Make sure new grips still allow proper hand fit to gun. It's like wearing thin or thick socks in boots. Made good gun better. I use it for match gun when not shooting single stack. You chose wisely, my friend.

It should run fine out of the box.

If you want to do some work on it...

Competition hammer.
Lighter Mainspring.
Grips.
Griptape maybe?
Mags?
Ammo?
Magbrake if you wish the mags to drop free?

welcome to the world of CZ, they are great pistols, like all firearms, they come with a little extra oil when purchased new, as the directions state, a good cleaning before firing is essential, but CZ's will run great stock, as previous posters acknowledged, some after market parts can make it a customized gun pretty easily

My own CZ pistol was covered in a light oil, not grease. I just field stripped it and cleaned it up with Gun Scrubber, followed by lube at contact points.

The only things I've done to my 75BD was to flatten out the mag brake (just use a flat screwdriver) and install a 16# hammer spring. Otherwise, just go shoot it.

I put wolff springs in mine...and a Houge grip. It ran fine with the factory springs too though. Great choice. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Have a couple of CZs... my 75B was a super shoot right out of the box. Other than giving it a real good initial cleaning using Hoppes Solvent and Breakfree CLP (don't know if Kerosene is needed)... that was it!
Some of the triggers on new CZs (especially my SP-01 and P-01) were very stiff... after about 2-300 rounds, perfect. My 75B has been my best shoot right out of the box (my 40B was a real close second).

Regarding ammo... all my target shooting has been with WMTs 9mm Winchester 'Whites'... inexpensive and flawless!

Got some rubber grips from Angus (Ghost Products, AZ)... look and feel great.

Good luck with the gun... CZs are GREAT pistols... Let the collection begin!!

If you get rubber grips, send me the wooden ones. :)
Also, if you can find a right side, hip holster, form fit in leather that protects the full length of the barrel, let me know what ya got... :banghead:

About 6 weeks ago I bought a P-01 and it's getting an action job done at CZ-USA. It was heavy and gritty so I talked to Mike and he is going to work it over.

Since then I found a like new CZ 75BD, made in 99, that has a very good trigger and needed nothing done to it. I now have a like new CZ 75B, made in 96, on the way and can't wait to see if it has as good a trigger as the BD. (CZ's multiply like crazy)

The Virginian, check out Dillon's Blue Press. They list their 5JR-DL holster for a CZ 75. They're supposed to be made by Mitch Rosen.

it will be a different gun with:

11 or 13# recoil spring (11 for light/regular WWB level target loads, 13 if you shoot hot/personal defense 9mm ammo)
13# hammer spring
thin cocobolo grips

recommended while you're in there:
flatten mag brake if it's not drop free
extra power extractor spring

if you want to be sexy:
cz competition hammer, drop-in part with only a small trimming needed to the safety leg of the sear; check the cz forums for this, we have several guides on it.
action job, also outlined at cz forums.

I don't know where you live, but get plenty of hi-cap mags if you can, Mec Gar makes them, and the newer generation are excellent quality.

"CZ's guns are heavily covered in grease and might need a "kerosene" bath."

The old G.I. 45 1911s used to be packed in cosmoline when they stored them. If that CZ comes heavily covered in grease, I'd make the gunshop clean it before I would accept it - skeeter_08

a field strip and clean is all that's needed. just wipe everything off is what i did. then i lubed up on the heavy side and broke it in. cleaned, then good to go.

i really recommend re-springing your gun though. makes it feel way different.

grips are a totally personal choice. check the ones at cz custom and the ones by hakan pek. my personal faves are cocobolo thins and the thin aluminums from cz custom.

What spring do you recommend? Wolff? What pound? I'll mainly be shooting target ammo, no reloads.

Best cleaner?
Best lube?

Any other miscellaneous items I might need?

find a cheap set of pin punches, brass tipped if you can. sears has their chinese version for like, $13. you'll need the smallest ones for working the pins on your gun.

cleaners and lubes are completely personal preference.

springs: czcustom.com and order up their 15# hammer spring and 13# recoil spring if you're going to be shooting winchester white box or the like. the 13/11 combo is usually for reloaders who fine tune their gun to shoot sensitive primers and light loads for sport shooting.

if you like wood grips, check out the cocobolo thin grips on that site as well. if you need fuller sized grips, i think they have standard thickness and extra thick, can't remember off the top of my head.

Nice choice. This is my favorite gun, I've never had any problems with it.
I did clean it when I first got it as I do to all new guns, it just can't hurt.
