Apparently that cuddly 12 foot tall critter that munched on 2 tree huggers the other day was finally dropped with 11 rounds from a semi automatic handgun.

If anyone knows the type, caliber and load used I would appreciate the info.

It's good to know that a restricted mag gun with a round in the chamber would be just enough to protect yourself with

I read this and wondered . . . why are the guys with shotguns standing around waiting for the bear to die while the guy unloaded with the handgun?

Now I'm wondering if the shotguns were loaded with anything bigger than birdshot?

A couple of years ago I ran into a U.S. Park Ranger armorer. He said that they were issued P7M8's and P7M13's. Unless the ranger made a rather quick reload, it wasn't the P7M8.

That guy has balls.

Imagine coming up to a bear that just mauled two people, and shooting it with some little pecker pistol.

I wouldn't feel comfortable unless I had a .270 and a couple guys standing next to me with rifles and shotguns.

Well, putting my self in the rangers shoes, er.. ah.. Boots, I'd guess that he found an ideal situation (bear that needs killing, short range, and two buddies with longguns) to make a point to supervisiors that a larger caliber handgun is necessary. That would be my guess.

"Imagine coming up to a bear that just mauled two people, and shooting it with some little pecker pistol."

You got a humerous way to crystalizing the situation.
X ring funny.

I know it's really really wrong, and I should feel guilty about it, but I chuckled out loud after reading the "victim's" credentials...

I really like "Crocodile Hunter Steve", but I keep waiting to see something like this about him one of these days.

There is a huge difference between a man like Steve Irwin who was born into his profession and raised in a zoo by experts in the field and a man who, in order to live out a childhood dream of being a bear, at 33 decides he's going to be an expert and spend a few months a year contaminating them.

That being said I think we all kinda expect Stevey to get a good nip sooner or later.

I almost forgot what caliber was the ranger's gun. That info may be usefull for the next "What Caliber For --" thread

A couple dept of the interior agencies issue Beretta 96s, which are .40 S&W and hold 11 rounds. Maybe the ranger was packing one of those> I have nothing to base this on other than reading about various govt agencies issue Beretta 96s.
