What (even minute) differences are there between a Galil and a genuine USSR AK-47/AKM?

Sights
Thumb safety
folding stock from FAL.
proprietary handguards w/ wire cutting bipod
propreitary magazine
.223 barrel, bolt assembly
Charging handle goes up so easier to work with left hand.

I'm probably forgetting something else...

bolt assembly

How is it different?

P.S. Military issue Galils have barrels which are welded (or similar) in place, impossible to disassemble manually/in armoury. Is it true for AK's?

I don't own a Galil, so this is a guess. It is using a .223 size case. The case head is substantially different dimensions than the 7.62x39. Therefore you would need a different bolt.

Yup, but are they different in measurements, or also in function?

FAL hand grip as well. The receiver is different also. I think you could say that the Galil uses the same gas system as an AK, otherwise they are two seperate firearms.

"while the method of operatiojn is identical to the Kalashnikov, Soviet AK-47 parts most certainly cannot be used in the Galil."

Are the barrels welded in place or brazed? That they're welded sounds odd.

The barrels of typical stamped AK are pressed then pinned in place. Milled AK receivers are usually threaded.

Anybody has pics of the position of the rear sight on the Galil?

The Galil bolt locks directly into the receiver to avoid cookoffs, unlike the AK. The extractor is different. Also the trigger and firing mechanism is derived from the Garand. AFAIK the Galil shares no interchangable parts with the AK.

Huh? Need to brush up on my gun English.

Now, how is the position of the AK rear sight different?

The AK sight is mounted at the foreend of the receiver. The gallil sight is mounted on the dust cover much closer to the eye like a krinkov.

Atop the back end of the gas tube. Has the sight radius of a Beretta Jetfire. :uhoh:
