...that if you shoot a bullet over a chronograph it will give you the velocity of the bullet. If you shoot a bullet through a chronograph it will not tell you the velocity of the bullet.:(:(:(

Yep I try real hard not to shoot a bullet through anything I don`t want to kill eaither ......lol
My crony works best when I shoot between the sky screens and the crony .

I'd heard that inadvertently allowing the magic smoke to escape from a chrony, could cause it to stop watching the bullets. Now I know.
My deepest sympathies for the recently deceased, and extended family.

if you want good crony readings with black powder loads ..you must get the crono far enough in front of the muzzle so the smoke doesn`t out run the bullet .....10ft is uasually far enough ....once the smoke hits the crono ...it will lock onto it and not the bullet .

That's a really nice stand. I've been thinking of something similar to keep shotgun wads from hitting anything on mine.
You may want to put some kind of thick steel on there, though. Any self-respecting bullet will go through 3-4" of wood without breaking a sweat.

Thanks Ryan, I will add that at some future point. ( read that to mean when I find some free ). For the moment, I stick with projectiles that suffer from low self esteem.:D

That's a pretty cool solution, whosyrdaddy.
Have you shot a relatively hot load on a similar piece of oak for penetration testing? I'd be curious to know how an oak block that thick fared.
Having only paper punched and metal spinner clanked my way to BP bliss, I really have no idea what kind of penetration BP pistols are capable of.

Has anybody noticed in the 3rd World Chrony photo the nature of the backstop?
:neener:
And is that red dot supposed to be like an apple on top of his head?
The Doc is out now.
PS, seen that photo before. That's funny no matter who you are!

A friend tried shooting a bunch of white pine boards with a .36, once. Dunno the charge, it was just a cheap brass-framed 1851 Navy, and he filled the chambers to within 1/4" of the top. Went through about 6" worth of wood.
A 36 gr .22 LR Federal bulk pack (I think) from a rifle expanded in the wood and went maybe 3".
Anything made of wood is definitely concealment, not cover.

Trust me when I say this.
A C&B Revolver be it .36 or .44 caliber has some serious punch when it comes to shooting ball or conical.
I haven't tried it with my lil 5.5" barreled Pietta but I do know that a .457 ball through a Uberti 3rd Model Dragoon with 40gr. FFFG will penetrate 4 1"X6" spaced 1" appart at 20 yards & still have enough ooomph to penetrate into the sand bar backinga few yards away.

:what: As RyanM says, concealment and not cover.
