DPMS AR bayonet fit question

So, how come a U.S. military issue bayonet (M-9 or M-7) won't fit my DPMS Panther A3 Light 16?

It does have the bayonet lug, but the reach from lug to flash hider is much longer on the rifle than on the knife.

Because the bayonet is designed for M4's with a barrel shorter than your 16".

16" is the shortest rifle barrel you can possess without paying $200 for a SBR tax stamp.

I have a 16" M4ergy (14 1/2" barrel), and the flash suppressor is 1 1/2 inches long. This extra length suppressor allows my M7 and M9 bayonets to fit. The flash suppressor is welded onto the barrel, making the total barrel length 16".

You have a 16" barrel with a standard flash suppressor. Unfortunately that won't work.

Question: How important is the bayonet to you?

The real GI M-4 carbine has a 14.4" barrel specifacally designed to be the right length to allow bayonet attachment.

As already noted, a civilian legal 16" barrel is too long unless you have a mid-length gas system or extended muzzle attachment.

CMMG makes a clamp-on bayo lug that will allow you to use a bayonet on your rifle. Fifth item down on this page:

It's funny, because the original shortys, the XM177 series, had the bayonet lugs milled off the front sight bases to save weight since there was no way to attach a bayonet.

Next time you see someone with a semi auto XM177 clone (Long flash hider to replicate the original sound moderator) tell him it's not a correct representation if it has a bayonet lug....:evil:

Your rifle shipped with a lug and a flash hider, QED your lower can be mated to ANY upper with the same features.

I kind of want one of those XM style uppers for grins.

The M7 fits my 16" just fine and gives me a whole 3" of deadly stabbing depth. :p
But reall, you don't need a bayonet on a light carbine especially an M9 boat anchor. Just carry a Ka-bar and you're good to go.

They didn't put a bayonet lug on.

They put a gas block/front sight base on... it just happens to have a bayonet lug on the bottom of it.

It is easier to make them all the same than to tool up and run a batch that doesn't have bayonet lugs.


Milling it off would be extra machining time that would make the rifle cost more.
