I want to try making my own lead shot, but without building a shot tower or buying a $350-$375 commercial machine. Anybody had any success on the "totally homespun" route, and if so, what did you do? Might come in handy if Oblahma starts taxing ammo components...

In 2008 there was an interesting how-to article on this in the Backwoodsmen Magazine. Go to their website and you will probably be able to find what month and order a back copy.

I just checked. It was the November/December 2007 Issue.

There is a great, 40+ page thread on this at shotgunworld. One of the more interesting things in it was from someone who'd make their own Littleton machine, which saved them a ton of money. (The patent is lapsed, too, I'm sure, since it's a 30 or 40 year old design.)

Go check it out! I certainly did.
