Best value budget shotgun

Another one of those threads:evil:. I'd like a <$250 shotgun, would like to stick with Rem 870 or Moss 500 types (+ their clones). Just one 18.5-20" would be fine, but having a extra hunting barrell would good also (in case I ever take up hunting).
This is what I've found in 12ga:
Maverick 88 - Walmart 28" 6shot $177
- I've seen replacment barrells for as low as $50 that could be cut, or 18.5" factory ones for $79+
Maverick 88 Security - Walmart 20" 8shot $197 (wait their are none in system inventory right now?)
- This is quite odd as the regular 88 has a higher MSRP than the Security, yet its more at walmart. I thought these used to be $142 or so? What I really want if I can find old price.
Used 870 Wingmaster - Local pawn shop $175 but I would need to cut the 28" barrell or buy a spare.
Norinco u87 clone - Centerfire $229 with both 28" and 18.5" included, no sales tax with partially takes care of shipping and I have $10 transfers. There are several items I would like to order also, so combined shipping may not be much.
Walmart special order???? On other models, not sure what going prices are?

Go for the 870, as barrels are plentiful and cheap.

What is it for? If general usage, I'd go with the used Wingmaster. Test-pattern the barrel before you consider cutting. My 28" full choke 20ga. Wingmaster has served me well for trapshooting with cheap target loads, and it patterns very well with buckshot. At 15 yards, the full charge stays on a paper plate.
For home defense, you should fort up, so a long barrel is not a handicap.
All my best,

"Go for the 870, as barrels are plentiful and cheap."
No offense, but are you serious? I went shopping for a new barrel for my 870 and they all have been $180 to $280 dollars...depending on the type of course. If you know of a place to buy these barrels cheap, please let me know, I would like to buy a rifled one that doen't cost me $200 +
I do agree that there are many of them lying around. An 870 is a good, and reliable shotgun. but, it doesn't make sense that you could almost get a brand new 870 for the price of a barrel.
c5 nc, if you want a smooth bore barrel, a good used will run about $50

Maverick 88 Security. But buy a limbsaver recoil pad for it, trust me.

Without any doubt, it's the Norinco Hawk 982. Equal to or better than the gun it copies, the Remington 870. If you can find one that is.

I have no real need for it at all  but just want one. Home Defense / SHTF would be good, something to take out a snake with (maybe I should just buy shot shells for a handgun or 22 rifle?), a friend mentioned deer hunting next season but I have never been (my tactical rifles are awefully heavy to be carrying real far and some of the areas may be moe suited to a shotgun)? I have 5 Handguns, several long range 308s, various assault rifles + Carbines, bunch of 22s, just think I need a shotgun.
This is the Norinco 870 copy... Ultra 87, u87, etc. for $229. Can I do better for 229 (likely $250 out the door?). We have a gun show comming up I am planning to check out also. I remember when classic had these for $149 with a single barrell, I knew I should have bought one.

It's OK to link to your thread. You do need to state what sort of sighting system it has though...

+1 on the maverick 88 security. I have had mine for 2 years and have put ~ 2000 trouble free rounds through it. I agree with NWdude83, it kicks a bit, but thats why they put a recoil pad on it;)

The $175 is wingmaster is gone now (sold tag on it, so maybe not 100% sold?), it was older shotgun that had obviously been used. They have a second wingmaster that looks to be in nicer condition, has a old Weaver Quik Point Red Dot mounted on it. $250 total. Replacement barrels seem costly.

c5 nc, you would probably be better off buying a combo with two barrels than buying a shotgun with one. Wish I had done that when I bought mine. Went to a gun show looking for used bird barrels and the cheapest I saw was $100 and it had pits allover and was 'painted' over to look newer. Told the guy best of luck selling it and went to a local gunshop and found a decent barrel for $80. No rust, but a little dirty and the bore was bright with no pitting after cleaning. Like I said it would be more cost effective to buy a combo with 2 barrels. Keep them both....you never know when you might want the other one.

Title pretty much says it, but at the beginning of last deer season Dick's had the Mossberg 500 combo, 28" VR and 24 rifled slug barrel, with dual combs, and scope (albeit a cheap one) on sale for $250 after rebate.
I thought it was a great deal. If you don't want the slug barrel sell it for ~$150, then enjoy your $100 brand new Mossberg 500. Hard to say if they'll do that again or not this year though...

Remington 870 20ga with 21" barrel.
Cost $289 from Budsgunshop.com and Remington had a mail in rebate.
I switch chokes and use it for Turkey, Pig-with rifled slugs, and every once in a while I shoot clays with it.

A few months ago I bought an 870P police trade-in for $169. Found some new 870P stocks for $30 and some new springs (magazine, sear and carrier dog springs) for $10 and I'm good to go. If you take your time, you can find "previously enjoyed" barrels for under $100.

Thought I would update thread.
Several users reported poor quality with the U87s so I did not order the one from Centerfire. While the other Norinco 870 clones have had past rep the these new Century speced ones users on ar15 forum had reported sights falling off, etc.
I bought a NEF 12ga 18.5" 6shot Protector. Its another 870 clone made in china for (Corrected, they are owned Marlin, which is owned by Remington), actually it appears to be nicer than a 870 Express at least, and it was only $167 shipped from Buds Gun Shop (they raised price to $180 since then, and have sold out now). Thanks everyone for the feedback.

Plus one here for the Norinco.
If you can find one.
Too many folks are snapping them up as fast as they can get them.
The NEF Pardner Pumps are an excellent choice if you plan to by a field gun or a HD shotgun.
They have the right stuff for a field grade shotgun.
They are great for what they are and how they are built.
They have a variety of styles and even make a cantilevered barrel for the Pardner Pump 12.
I have a 12 and a 20 in the NEF Pumps and they are well made and look good ,too.
I would endorse Mossberg, Maverick, Remington(old Wingmasters) and the lot but NEF is just making too good of a deal for a true field grade shotgun.

Big 5 stores have the Mossberg 500 combo for $299, but you can get 10% off of a purchase by signing up online for their mailing list... So ~ $270

For me to rely on a certain model for defense, it has to have been in production and tested for a long time, basically measured in decades.
It may seem silly, but that is my first criteria. Then I purchase the gun and test that gun myself for reliability, ergonomics, etc.
For me, there are two pump shotguns when it comes to defense that are currently in production. The Remington 870 and the Mossberg 500.

I'll ditto that. On a budget, I'd be happy with either, and also a used Winchester 1300, and I actually like the 1300 better than the 870, and I think like I my Mossberg 500s maybe even better. I own all three, and I'd recommend anyone on a budget be shopping pawnshops for used deals any of the three.

Good budget shotguns with a defensive slant besides the 870 and 500 include.....
Winchester's 1200 and 1300. Their older model 97s and 12s are also, but are assuming rarified prices.
The BPS.
Ithaca's GREAT 37. If I HAD to get a pump other than an 870, this would be it.
High Standard's Flite King and its variants.
SOME Savages. Others are junk.
Among autos, the A5, 11 and 720 are hard to beat.

That is a most excellent question. My guess would be the answer is "you don't". At least not with your shooting hand, but with your support hand. Never thought of that before.

I ordered a NEF Pardner Protector 12 gauge back in March and I finally got the call last week that it had come in. Took 3 months but it arrived. $190 plus tax. Not a bad deal for what I have heard is a great gun for the money.
BTW, I have been looking for a used Mossberg or Remington but they are very hard to find and seem to garner a premium price.
