Only your firearm could actually determine that scenario. Usually the SP would excel.

Greetings,

Does that mean that usually Soft points would perform better than FMJ?

Thank you

The FMJ with an open base is often less accurate than a close based SP.
I'd like to add that the Hornady FMJ is usually better than other FMJ brands though.

Greetings,

It is why I want to buy Hornady bullets and not the Winchester. There was another thread here a few weeks ago that pointed me to those Hornady.

I am learning about bullets in rifles. I reload in pistols and I found out with hard cast lead I am getting the best accuracy right now from all my guns. But I don't want hard cast lead in my AR or SIG 556...hehe

I'll simply order the Hornady FMJ and see hope I'll get a better result than with my commercial ammo that (saying it mildly) sucks...

Thank you

If you are looking for the most accurate bullet, as you stated in the OP, see post #4 again!

I would bet money the SP will outshoot the FMJ in about any rifle you try them in.

I have a Remington 700 in 222. It has always shot well. I have used many different match bulets to achieve the best group.I bought 1000 Hornady 55 grain SP's at a low price from Midway. These turned out to be the most accurate bullet for my 222. Just find what your rifle likes. Byron

The soft point is intended to be very accurate, the FMJ is not. My .222 Mag loves the Hornady 50 & 55 Gr soft points. Your rifle may as well.

+1 for the Hornady 55 gr. FMJs as they are more precisely manufactured than the Win bulk bullets I've used.

I recently bought a couple hundred of the Rem. 55 gr. FMJs and was surprised to see that they also looked very well made, though I haven't loaded them yet.

That said.... at 100 yds with open sights off of a sand bag, I doubt you'll be able to tell the difference.

My best .223 groups have been with 69 gr. Sierra Match king BTHPs

I have shot plenty of both, and in none of my 223s do either give the kind of accuracy I expect from Vmax bullets.
