possible? Not that I'm unhappy with my 659, just curious if 2nd gen frames are compatible w/ 3rd gen slides/barrels. I heard S&W made a transitional run of 659 pistols that had 5906 slides.
Thanks.

Good question. Ordinarily, I would have said no, but most of the changes between the 659 and 5906 were for cutting corners (it essentially has no real grip except for the polymer). They made the sights better, but if I had my choice, I'd take the 659. If the polymer grip of the 5906 ever cracked or broke, the entire gun would be pretty much useless. In fact, the first series did have a tendency to crack and were recalled. S&W sent me a replacement, which I put on, but I was careful to save the original. If you have one and haven't replaced it, I recommend you do so.

Do not run a 4006 slide on a 659 frame.
S&W had to beef up the frame in order to handle the .40S&W.

FYI Smith did make a transitional run of gen 1 to gen 2 slides on the 645 series.........I've only seen three and I own one of them..............seems it'd be a possible conversion but rather caliber specific.
