I contacted my school about writing an Op-Ed in the upcoming campus newsletter and they said they would run it! Mods: I know this isn't calling for activism of forum members, but it is my activism directly related the previous topic in this subforum. Here is what I submitted:

To Editor-in-chief Miss Jen Harris, the JCCC Board of Trustees, and JCCC student body,

I recently read the article Hide and Seek Heat [Opinion] by Jen Harris in the March 2009 issue of the JCCC Campus Ledger and I am writing you all to express my concern about the article. In the article, Jen writes a one-sided article on gun ownership and campus concealed carry that lacks the basic research that should be expected of any journalist. She states that she is a “card-carrying member of the protect the Constitution club.” She goes on to say that it is unfortunate that the citizens of the United States have the right to own firearms. A bit contradictory, don’t you think? Jen goes on to question students petitioning for the right to conceal carry, with a valid permit, on campus. Being a member of the “card-carrying protect the Constitution club,” I would expect Jen Harris to understand that the first amendment protects and guarantees the right to petition.
Editor-in-chief Jen Harris later asks what her right is to live in a society “free of guns”, and mentions that she would prefer our country ban personal gun ownership. The banning of firearms is an unrealistic solution to a problem that simply does not exist: It is not the law abiding citizens that are the problem, but instead the criminals. Those criminals don’t care about the safety of you or your family, and they certainly do not care about the law and “No-Gun” signage on schools and federal buildings. Jen, you have just as much a right to make our society free of guns, as I have to regulate your first amendment rights.
Given the recent public shooting tragedies, have we not seen that “Gun-Free Zones” attract these mass murderers? “No-Gun” signage is advertisement of unarmed and defenseless victims. I would encourage anyone reading this to look away from the unfair media propaganda and do your own research on this topic. You can see the results of gun and violent crime studies conducted by the FBI, ATF, and The Criminal Justice Research Center as well as other little-known-facts at www.gunfacts.info . I assure you that you will see that private gun ownership is a benefit to our country and our freedom from a tyrannical government.
Best Regards,

I'll let you guys know how it turns out and if it does get published as I was promised.

Good counter.

If you get a response in the form of a counter comment, feel free to post in Activism Discussion so you can take advantage of having other members dig info up for you and bounce ideas around to help take her reply apart.

Good work. I wouldn't have been able to be so gentle.

That paper has gone downhill ever since I quit working for them. ;)

I would have added some facts about ownership and crime, or some real stories about how guns saved lives. But all in all thats a positive!!!

I would very much like to hear her explanation of how she can support both positions in the same paragraph.
