Ruger 9mm and +P Ammo
Confederate

My sister was taking her CCW certification course this past week and she asked me to go and keep her company, so I did. At one point in the course, the instructor mentioned that he knew a guy who routinely carries a gun he has never fired. He then said, noting the obvious problem with that, that they didn't have one Ruger 9mm that worked reliably with 9mm +P. "So if you don't try it," he explained, "you don't know if it's going to even work."
Although his point was well taken, I wondered if anyone here has had problems with Rugers and +P ammo? Ruger builds robust pistols and certainly should handle the hotter stuff.
I've never tried +P with my S&W 659, but plenty of people have told me that it works fine. But it has a steel receiver, and so does the Ruger. If it doesn't work, I told him later, certainly it would be worth while trying a stouter spring.
But what of the Rugers? Anyone have any problems with +P?

A ruger pistol will take +P ammo, and work reliably. I've never heard of a ruger gun not being able to take +P.

+p and +p+ for my P95.
The guns a tank. Its twice as stout as a 9mm has any right to be. I wouldn't worry about a little extra power. It's not much anyway.

I've shot 5-6 hundred rounds of +P+ through my P89 and it has never had a problem. It's probably the toughest gun I own, and heaviest. Mike

I've fired +p+ through my SR9 in both Winchester and Federal Brands. They just aren't as hot as they used to be. Good stuff though and both my pistol and I loved them.

Glad to hear it. Like I said, the instructor said: "Make sure you test your guns with the type of ammunition you'll be carrying. We have a number of Ruger 9mms here and not one of them will function with 9mm ammunition. They'll jam every time."
That just didn't sound right. Thanks!

I just bought a Ruger KP95 and I recall something I read in the manual. (Yeah, I read it. Right after I took the gun out and shot it all afternoon.) It said this handgun will shoot any commercially available 9mm x 19mm ammunition. I don't recall if it was specific about +p or anything but I must say that they would not have put it that way if it wasn't safe or true. I will have to check the manual for specific wording again but this was the jest of the statement.
I hope that helps.

I hope this helps.
The RUGERŪ P95PR pistols are chambered for the 9mm x 19 Parabellum
(9mm Luger) cartridge. Do not attempt to load any other 9mm cartridges
(examples: 9mm short [.380], 9mm Steyr, 9mm Bergmann, etc.) into the
magazine or chamber of the pistol. Never attempt to use caliber .40 S & W
cartridges in a 9mm pistol. The .40 S & W cartridges will jam the pistol.
The Ruger P-Series pistols are compatible with all factory ammunition loaded to
U.S. Industry Standards, including high-velocity and hollow-point loads, loaded
in brass, aluminum, or steel cartridge cases. No 9mm x 19 ammunition
manufactured in accordance with NATO, U.S., SAAMI, or CIP standards is known
to be beyond the design limits or known not to function in these pistols.
