Its either a "Colt .357 Magnum" and that's what its named or its an old model Trooper manufactured between 1953 and 1969. These pistols are of high quality and where made as competition to S&W. Built on the same frame and internals as the Colt Python they didn't have the full lug barrel and vent rib of the Python. The "Colt .357 Magnum" version has a wide hammer spur and target style grips. Between 1961 and 1969 the Colt 357 Magnum name was dropped and only the Trooper name was retained though Colt continued to offer target hammer and grips as an option.
The Trooper was Updated in 1969 with new frame, coil springs and different internals and sold as the Trooper MKIII.
