If I sight in a .22 target rifle for 100 yds

would it just make it useless for any shorter range due to the drop?

Or ofcourse you could say, "If i sight it in for 50yrds, will it be useless for 100 due to the drop?"
You could just figure out the drop, and hold over, if nots not a critical bullseye shot.

It should also be dead on at some shorter range.
Depending on ammo and sight height.

From what I've read--and therefore what I've done--a 75-yard POI for sight-in seems to work pretty good. For any particular ammo, learn the "over" at 30 to 50 yards, and the "under" at 100.

That when I sighted mine in that the book said that if you sighted in at 25 yards then it came back in at 75 yds., and that it would be 2" high at 50 yds. and 4" low at 100 yds. And I found that to be true (at least for my gun and LR ammo.

For me .. sights set 50 .... and ''allowance'' for the 100.... that with a scope.

I dunno, but I have an Old Redfield Micrometer Apperature on my Remington 510 Targetmaster, and if you set it at 100, you hit every time. When you set it at 25, you hit every time. Something to be said for iron sights huh?:D

topgun,
The guys are right.... only experimenting and note taking (or a decent memory) will tell the tale...
Two major variables are:
Sight line height above the bore (irons or scope)
Ammo type & barrel length (i.e. muzzle velocity)
A full range of possibilities exists for both variables.
You are just gonna' have to try it and find out....

If you go to an ammunition manufacturer's website, like http://www.federalcartridge.com/ammocat20.asp?s1=1
You'll find the ballistic tables for the ammo you shoot. This can be quite different for Match ammo (which is usually sub-sonic) versus high velocity.
For example, Federal 900, if sighted in at 50 yards, would hit 0.2" high at 25 yards, 2.2" low at 75 yards, and 6.6" low at 100.
By comparison, Federal 712 sighted in at 50 yards would hit 6.3" low at 100.
I have Lyman target sights on a Mossberg 44US. It takes so many clicks to get to 100 yards that I don't bother. I normally zero for 25 yards to shoot indoors, and then crank on a bunch to get to 50, although the sight is calibrated to help get in the ballpark.

Looking at the ammo library provided in the Oehler Ballistic Explorer, .22LR 40 grain solid bullets have ballistic coefficients between 0.14 and 0.16, a great long list of Ely standard velocity target ammo listed as 0.157 (MV 1080fps). If you tell me a few specific loads, I’ll look them up if they are listed.
Probably the best long range bet, from this library, at least, is going to be the Ely Rabbit HV solid 40 gr. With a B.C. of 0.223 (I am suspicious of this-it is around 50% higher than most of the rest of the 40 grainers in the library) and muzzle velocity from a 24 inch test barrel of 1312fps. Other common loads are several loads with 38 gr bullets, MV ‘s of 1280 (24" barrel), B.C.’s of 0.128; several 40 gr, 1255fps, 0.139 loads; and on and on…
Take these numbers, or those of your chosen loads, to
http://www.norma.cc/htm_files/javapagee.htm
load them into the "Define your own bullet" option, and play with the sliders. Bear in mind all of the things that effect velocity in the real world as compared to the manufacturers’ test tunnels: your mileage will almost certainly vary. The best way to answer your question is to test a variety of ammo to find one that meets your needs best and then buy a case or three of the same lot number.
FWIW, from the Oehler Ballistic Explorer:
Zeroed at 100 yards the Ely Rabbit load peaks at 2.3 inches high at about 57.75 yards with the sight height set at 1.5 inches (scoped) and 2.6 inches and 55 yards for a sight height of 0.75 inches (iron?) so mind the sight height!
