Ammunition being what it is these days, I've been keeping my ear to the ground for yard sales here and garage clear-outs there. Yesterday I hit paydirt when a co-worker agreed to sell me 800 rounds of 7.62x51mm for $100 :what:

I don't even own anything in NATO standard, guess now I've got an excuse to pick up a new rifle as well. :rolleyes:

Any recommendations for an inexpensive semi-auto? I think I'll be hitting the next local gun auction. Woohoo!

308/7.62 nato has some very good inherent accuracy potential.

go with something that does it justice.

maybe an fal, or an m1a/14, maybe even an ar config.

if i couldnt settle on one of those id have to go for a bolt gun.

i would not settle for something with ak/spray and pray accuracy.

accuracy is pretty important to me, if i cant make it shoot around an inch or a little better, i dont really want it.

I suppose I could have worded the OP a a little better if that's the impression you got. i don't think I "did him" at all.

In short I've worked with the guy for years, we get on fine, and we've done business before. Sometimes it's a screaming deal, sometimes it's not. Either way I let the man name his own price, and whatever is going on in his garage that he keeps turning up stuff like this every so often isn't a lick of my business.

I've always had an "itch" for a FAL. In a situation like that, now would be as good a time as any to pick one up.

"...now I've got an excuse..." It's a reason, not an excuse. However, TIMC and madcratebuilder have a good point. Indian and Pakistani ammo is unreliable at best. What's on the headstamp? There's a fairly complete list of 7.62NATO headstamps here.

The ammo, depending on what make, will work just fine out of any .308 rifle. Doesn't have to be a battle rifle. Not with any great accuracy though, Milsurp ammo isn't made for accuracy.
"...an inexpensive semi-auto?..." No such thing if you're thinking about a battle rifle. A Saiga 22" barrel runs $549. Don't bother with the 16" barrel. Too much muzzle blast and flash.
"...always had an "itch" for an FAL..." There are FAL's and there are FAL's. They're not all created equal. A good one is a fabulous rifle. Heavy though. Pass on any Century assembled FAL. Some are fine, some are nightmares. Little or no QC. Mixed 'inch' and 'metric' parts.

Just got a battlepack of Lithuanian GGG .308 for $65/200 rounds. Considering it is Boxer primed I'm happy.

And as far as Indian ammo goes, the 1970's date headstamped stuff was pretty dang good. Granted it's not Port or Santa Barbara or Radway Green, but pretty good nonetheless- considering the plant was built and overseen by Radway... The 90's and 2000's dated Indian stuff was pure crap on a cracker, because the Brits weren't overseeing production then and the Indians just let it run into the ground.
