I finally made the drive up to J&G arms today and purchased a Mosing Nagant 91/30. I hade great customer service and will go back as soon as I save some more money up for a Mauser. Great place and glad they are close by.
I cannot wait to shoot this bad boy.
Cheers!

Congrads! And remember, you're required to give a range report on the bad boy! ;)

rangerruck, thanks for the links. I used the 7.62 forum to find out how to break it down and clean it.
Too much fun to be had.

Your 91/30s will probably be much more accurate than my two MN 44s.
I only shoot at old plastic containers from about 80 feet, but yesterday a friend, who was on and still shoots with the Navy Rifle Team, tried one of my 44s on small sand bags.

The large plastic (peel 'em) 18 " target was at 50 yards, using iron sights. It's the kind of target that makes a bright green outline.

Shooting ten times, Mike only got about three rounds within 6" of the bullseye, and could not figure out where some of the others went. Used his own small sand bag devices and a spotter scope.
This guy is a sharpshooter and has gone to matches in Camp Perry, OH and many others, having won about nine rifles as prizes along the way.

But this ammo is so cheap to use. Shooting is still sort of new to me (despite age).
I had two of these rounds make partial 'keyholes' from 50 yards with a MN 44 recently.
Is the Bulgarian stuff the main culprit, if the bores are really shiny and clean, or does a thin layer of oil in the bore not thin out after the first two rounds?

AZ -stay away from Mosins they are dangerously addictive and habit forming. You'll find yourself buying just a couple more several times.

Ah yes, the Mosin claims yet another. Be careful though, you may begin to develop signs of a disease known as Mosinitis. Many of us here suffer from it. :D

There really is no cure, except to go out and buy another. Repeat as necessary.

Yeah J&G is a great place. I used to live up the road from that place and would stop in there several times a week. My last purchase from them before I moved to NM was a Mosin 91/30 hex receiver ex-sniper.

Enjoy the Mosin and don't expect it to be your last.

You really should ensure that the barrel is oil free before shooting the Mosin, or any other gun. Try some Czech silver tip, but make sure that you remove the corrosive salts after firing any surplus ammo.

Don't do it, man. Don't even consider it or you will be lost. Once you go the Mauser route abandon all hope. I ended up with two in as many weeks. Worse, don't even look in the general direction of an Enfiled. And if you see a Gewehr 88 or Swedish Mauser run the other way.

And how did all of this madnesss start for me? With a Mosin Nagant, of course.

There's something about milsurps that is just so darned fun, I wish I could put my finger on it.

You can always wait until the "Crossroads of the West" show at the state fairgrounds in Phoenix AZ. J&G is always there and they have nice deals on the mil surp stuff and ammo too.

BTW Congrats on your Mosin. Get them while they are inexpensive!

Took it out to the desert today and besides the Pinal county police showing up it was a great day to be outside shooting. The Mosin is much more accurate then I ever will be. Forgot to take pictures but at 50 yards it was hitting some nice groups. I think I might have a bruise tomorrow but cannot wait to take it out again.

I think I need to add another one so the first does not get lonely.

? Any particular lube/cleaner that works well. I have Breakfree right now.

If your just shooting commercial ammo then what you have would be fine.

If your shooting surplus ammo on the other hand, you'll need to flush the bore out with hot water to dissolve the salts. Some will say to clean the bolt as well, but I've never had a problem with it. Get the metal hot enough and you won't need to dry it, since the heat will evaporate what's left. After that, go about your normal cleaning routine.

sharkhunter- did not flush out the barrel and just cleaned it really well. Should I flush now still and clean away again??
I did spray it with some windex before coming home. The thought was the ammonia in the windex would counter act the acidic surplus ammo I was shooting. Does the CLP do anything to the acid in the surplus ammo?

Well done! They are addictive, so say hello to your first and get ready for your next!

Congrats on your new Nagant. They are neat rifles and where else can you get a rifle made from Russian pine, with a bent nail for a trigger, and a solid steel buttplate to compliment the 7.62x54R punch to the shoulder? ;)

I have a couple and they are decent guns once you get them sighted in. I suggest buying a case (880 rounds) of the corrosive ammo for cheap as it is drying up and that cheap ammo makes the gun worth it.

azmtnbikerxdm - Ammonia actually does nothing to dissolve the salts. Ammonia will however eat some of the copper fouling. The water in the Windex is what dissolves all that crap.

I've tried Windex, and it didn't work, probably because I didn't use enough. I also don't see the point in wasting Windex on that when it could be better suited to cleaning my windows :D.
I just find hot water right out of the tap easier, but if Windex works for you...then by all means use it.

As far as CLP, I have no idea since I dont and haven't used it.
