I need a good holster to carry a Springfield Mil-Spec 1911 (full size) concealed. I live in a hot climate and rarely wear a coat or jacket. Heretofore I have used an Uncle Mike IWB, which, well, sucks. It's worn out now and I would like a new holster. I also am kinda cheap and don't want to spend $100 on one.

Is IWB the only choice for me or is there a better way?

Whatever your answer I'd appreciate input on a good holster.

Is there a reason you don't want an IWB? If the Uncle Mike's is your only experience with IWB, you shouldn't base your opinion off of it, because like you said, they pretty much suck.

Check out the Milt Sparks line up. The Summer Special II is a great IWB, and Brownells stocks them for 1911s (IOW, no wait time), and sells them at Milt Sparks' price. That's a tough deal to beat for a high quality holster. That's what I use, and I am from the hot muggy south. I can hide my commander with a thick T-shirt, but I usually put on a thin short sleeve button down shirt over it, and leave it unbuttoned, just for extra peace of mind.

I've bought 2 holsters now from Nate at UBG Holsters. One for my Sig p6 and one for my 1911 commander. I'm very happy with the quality and comfort of both. The 1911 rides in the Canute model and the Sig in the Striker. The 1911 actually hides better and is slightly more comfortable. Around $80 shipped.

I live in Florida and have a Milt Sparks Summer Special for my Commander, i can wear a loose t-shirt over it and it conceals it pretty well. I think an IWB is the only way to go if you want dress for Florida summers.

I use BlackHawk Check-Six Leather Concealment for my 1911's just a long tailed shirt will conceal. Its a outside belt holster. Its very comfortable, I wear it from the time I get up in the mornings to the time I go to bed. I paid like 49.95 for mine. I know you said you didn't want to spend much, but the Brommeland is the nicest concealed carry holster I've ever owned.

I routinely carry a full-size Kimber CDP in a Milt Sparks 60TK, and often conceal this setup under only a plain t-shirt. The 60TK has, if I recall correctly, the highest ride of the Milt Sparks product line, and I can assure you it does ride quite high. I absolutely despise IWB carry, as I have found it incredibly uncomfortable. By comparison, the 60TK is extremely comfortable and easy to conceal, even with a full-size 1911, and was well worth the cost and the long wait to get one.

My only complaint on the 60TK revolves around my own laziness, which is I hate having to thread/unthread a belt through the holster loops. I use an Alessi CQC/S (a fantastic concealment holster with snap closing belt loops) when I carry my Colt Defender, and I really like having the option of easily removing the gun/holster via the snap loops. If the 60TK attached via snap loops like the Milt Sparks Axiom (or the aforementioned CQC/S), then I think I would have found my holster Nirvana :)

Well, its more than $100, but my favorite holster for my 1911 is the Milt Sparks VMII.

I'll take a moment to pimp the Crossbreed Supertuck, and if you don't have one, you should probably get a real gunbelt, I went with Beltman, but Crossbreed reportedly makes a good one as well.

the scout is fine, but listen to the people saying things about a good belt too, the holster and belt go hand in hand. I have an expensive rig, but I love it for my fullsize 1911's

The pic is of a Dan Wesson CBOB 1911 in a CUDA by Simply Rugged with a matching mag pouch. Note the removeable straps on the holster. These will allow for this holster to be carried either IWB or OWB as the wearer chooses. It is really nice to have that choice on occasion.

The basic holster and straps (without the gussied up tooling I chose) will run right at $75.00 for a holster that is quality made and, as its name applies, simply rugged. I recommend both the holster and its maker without reservation.
