22 Savage high power loads

Hope someone can help here;
I've just got a Savage 1899H in 22 high power (made in 1915) it's in good sound condition.
I can get brass and heads by Sellior & Bellot or Norma and I can get dies but I can find very little info on loads.
The best I've come up with so far is 22-25gr of IMR 3031.
I tend to use Accurate powder as it's much cheaper (here in UK) and I think 2520 should work ok but I have no data.
Any opinions, loads or advice would be appreciated.
Jay

Cartridges of the World #6 shows six loads.
55 grain - IMR-4895 - 27.0 grains - 2,870 FPS.
55 grain - IMR-3031 - 30.0 grains - 3,260 FPS.
55 grain - H-380 - 29.0 grains - 3,200 FPS.
70 grain - IMR-4895 - 28.0 grains - 2,900 FPS.
70 Grain - IMR-4320 - 29.0 grains - 2,820 FPS = Factory dup load.
70 grain - IMR-3031 - 26.0 grains - 2,850 FPS.
70 grain - Factory Load - 2,800 FPS.
All loads should be considered MAX and reduced 10% to start.
But I would not use max loads anyway.
The Savage 99 has a springy action and is hard on brass if loaded to full potential. And a lot of them that old already have excess headspace, especially the take-down models.
Were I you, I would headspace off the shoulder instead of the rim, by backing the sizing die out until the lever begins to close with very slight drag.

English Jay, here is a site with some load data. As rcmodel mentioned, the heavy loads are to be avoided in your old Savage for the reasons that he noted. Case separations can occur if you stress the action.

here's a good article: http://www.chuckhawks.com/5-6x52r.htm
The data in the 1970 Lyman 45th used .228 Winchester 70 grain bullets with Win LR primers and Winchester cases tested in a Savage 99.
IMR 3031 start 24 grains--2433 fps--maximum 27-2777 fps
IMR 4895 start 25--2400==max 28-2754
IMR 4320 start 27-2652==max 30-2840fps
accuracy load IMR 3031 25.3-2604 fps
factory duplication load IMR 3031 25.5-2624 fps
These Win bullets are obsolete and the only U.S bullet company (that I'm aware of) making a .227 bullet is Hornady with their 70 SP .227" diameter bullet #2280.
I've got an old chart from Norma using their bullets and powder from around 1975.
5.6x52R bullet # 65604 and 65605 71 grain---max cartridge length 2.50"/63.5mm---Norma LR primer---Norma 202 powder--25.5 grains/1.65 grams--2789 fps---42100 PSI same data for both bullets.
Norma said to reduce 10-20% and work up to these maximum charges.
Hornady 7th manual using a Mauser 66, RWS case, Federal 210 primer, max case length 2.047", Hornady # 2280 70 gr. .227 dia. Spire Point seated to an overall length at 2.510".
IMR 4198---start 20.2-2700fps--21.1-2899--22.1-2900 --max 23.1-3000
Alliant Reloder 7---start 19.8-2500 21.3-2700 22.9-2900 max 23.6-3000
IMR 3031 start 22.1-2500 23.8-2700 25.6-2900 max 27.4-3100
In your rifle I'd try to keep velocity in the range of factory ammo in the mid 2600's.

English Jay, I've tried to come up with loads for A2520 that you mentioned, but was unsuccessful. It's burn rate is very near IMR4064.
Perhaps an email to them may give you some info. http://www.accuratearms.com/
Have a great day.

NCsmitty,
Yes, according to the burn tables it's similar to 4064, R15, N140 & Norma 202. The last two are listed for the 22 HP and R15 does well in the 219 zipper & the 25-35 with heavier bullets so it should work well.
May be worth asking Accurate if they have any data.

I've found information that sugests you can reform 25-35 brass into 22 savage simply by running it through a full length 22 resizing die.
It's a very similar case and the neck reduction isn't much but does this sound like it will work ok?

I have the die set for reforming .30-30 into .22 Savage High Power. There are actually differences between the .25-35 and the .30-30 that were discused in a past issue of Handloader magazine. Hold on a few days and let me hunt it up so I can have it in front of me, but if my recollections are correct, the body diameter near the base is bigger on the .30-30, and this is better.

The 22 Savage Hi-Power is still avaiable in Europe as the 5.6X52R.
Ken Waters "Pet Loads" has data as does the VihtaVouri manual #2 & #3. I`d be willing to bet a e-mail or phone call to Hodgdon would get you some data also, even though they don`t offer it in their current manual.
You already know Norma offers brass for one. I`m not sure who all offers proper sized bullets.
