I purchased a mismarked S&W 581 .357 4" last week that's very tight, but had a good bit of holster wear. From what I've read and the information i've gathered, I do believe it's an ex-police revolver. It was DA and I didn't care for the hammer spur or to convert it to SA/DA. I will be carrying it soon (as soon as the fobus holster arrives) and decided to bob the hammer that was on it since I can't afford a gunsmith or a new pre-bobbed hammer (which seem pretty hard to find for L frames). I was watchin what I believe was a marathon of Law & Order: CI, so I laid up in bed, laid a towel over me, grabbed a few files and sheets of sand paper, and started grindin away.
Before the bob... The cylinder had more holster wear than this pic shows, so I took most of it off for when I reblue it. Plus... I like revolvers with satin/bare cylinders and colored frames.

Here it is when I started. The bluing was removed withed 220grit sandpaper so I could make out the edges better.

A lil more grindin...

And the spur is off!

Addin the finishing touches. Makin everything true and a lil polishin goin on. Those multi-padded womens nail polishin thingies work very well for finishing.

And the finished product. This ought to keep it snag free since I usually wear an overshirt and loose fitting close year round. The cylinder is alot shinier... excuse the poor quality cell phone pix.

Total time spent on it was about 2 hours using 2 different files, 60 grit, 150 grit, 220 grit, 600 grit, and that lil womens nail multi padded polishin thingy. Alot easier and FUN than I thought it would be. This was my first bob, btw.
Just thought i'd share, thanks for lookin/reading. Have a good day
I love doin this sort of thang :)
