I'm trying to figure out a way to organize and store rifle and pistol mags.
Shoe boxes? Filing drawers?
Thanks for any ideas.
Steve

I just have them in cardboard boxes, but it would probably be best to keep them in sealed .50 caliber government ammo cans.

A really big wicker basket, a bookshelf, and a cardboard box.
There may be some missing, too. :uhoh:
My downstairs neighbour prefers .30-cal ammo cans, neatly labelled and carefully lined up in alphabetical order from "anal" to "retentive". (...and when he reads this, I'm sunk! :D )

Cigar boxes lined with aluminum foil for the pistol mags.

As if we needed another reason to smoke cigars.:D
The preban rifle mags get stacked in the back of the big safe except for the AK and FAL mags. They go in .50 cal. ammo cans.
Tamara's neighbor is a lightweight.;) :)

I have a big plastic storage container, with no-rust tabs from Sinclair, in my downstairs safe for all of the extras. The ones that get used regularly are in the upstairs safe...or in one of the range bags, the car, the desk, the table, the nightstand or the closet. The ones in the closet don't fit any gun I own and are in the spare holster box.

I sort them by caliber, and rifle. For example, some of my old Adventure line mags work better in the Preban Colt HBAR, then they do in the new AR180B. I attach a sticker, with the date of purchase, and its reliablity on the base. I keep them in plastic bags, the ones sold to store vegetables in the fridge, and put them in a Rubbermaid box. Each is cataloged in an Excel spreadsheet.

Mine usually hang out in my range bags but I still seem to be missing two. . . need to get back to cleaning the house.

Plastic boxes, cardboard boxes, rifle cases, drawers. They do all manage to stay in one room. Only b/c my wife says so.... :uhoh:

I bought an extra house so I would have room for my mags.

Each handgun is in a lockable rug and each rug has five slots for mags. The rugs, with identification tags are locked in a safe. I select the handgun I want to work with, put it (or them) into my range bag, along with ammo, and I'm off. Now holsters and speed loaders/holders are another story.

Got one of those $8.00 (lockable)orange Home Depot tool boxes. (Of course, I don't own NEARLY as many guns as most of you, but I'm working on it).:D

I wish I had the mags and guns to go with them to worry about this problem. The four I've got for my Colt are right next to it, with one at half capacity for spring life purposes.

Fully loaded and stuffed in the appropriate pouches on my Blackhawk Vest (http://www.blackhawkindustries.com/product_detail.asp?product_id=1927&d=1) hanging in the closet right next to my bed. (holds 6 AR15 mags and i think four pistol mags)

I've only got two pistols and two rifles that accept mags. As a result I haven't had to come up with anything concrete on how to store them yet.
Some are in the bottom of my steel gun cabinet. Mostly the pistols ones because I've found I tend to lose track of them and when I want to get to the range -NOW- they're sometimes hard to find. I usually keep 2 mags in each pistol case though so I have enough to go shooting. The others may be empty in the bottom of the cabinet or sometimes loaded halfway up with ammo for defense purposes. Actually there's a Glock 21 mag sitting next to me right now with 6 rounds in it.
I've got something like 9 AR-15 mags floating around. Most of them are crap though so I don't even care where they are. The "businees" ones are in a GI pouch tough. Others maybe laying on my bedroom floor, under the couch, or in an ammo box. I bought some pristine looking made in England ones a while ago (30 rnders) that will just fall out of my Bushmaster and have had a myriad of other bad experiences with AR15 mags.
The AK ones are rock solid. A couple in the gun cabinet and a couple in my bedroom.
What I -really- need to do is get a proper stripper clip setup and keep 6 AR mags + pouches and clips in my ALICE pack with 3 mags worth of .45 ACP in a loose pocket for my "gotta go" pack. The rest of my mags should go in ammo cans along with their respective caliber to keep things somwhat organized.

Keep them close to my guns. ;)
I love bandoliers - I store mags in bandoliers, even Glock mags and such... two per pouch. Works great.

Yes, I mean it - Luvs diaper wipes come in light green plastic tubs with hinged lids. The tubs stack very nicely and you can write on their ends with a marker to identify the contents. I have DOZENS full of all kinds of things - magazines, parts, tools, sights, slings, small holsters, etc. Use your imagination.
They will work fine for most items, though if you need waterproof storage it's tough to beat 50 cal ammo cans.
Yes, I have children. This knowledge is a HUGE gift to those of you that don't. Never fear, you will find many uses for the wipes inside these tubs even if you don't have children.
Just watch for the sales at discount stores and stock up.

Tamara,
Have you smelled any skunks around the house lately? They go house to house and snatch HK and AR magazines like it's food or something.
I just keep them lined up neatly in the safe by caliber. Sometimes in magpouches, but I only have 4 guns, and only 3 of them use mags.

I use .50 ammo cans, labeled "AK mags" and "AR mags", not "anal" or "retentive". 30cal 200rd linked cans are too small for enough mags to be worth my while
The cans are useful in that they're portable, watertight and fit AR mags very well. AK mags require some work to fit. Plus they're like $3 at shows. That's less than tupperware!
Ammo cans...the new tupperware.

Or, perhaps:
"Ammo cans....tupperware for Real Men"
or
"Ammo cans....SHTF tupperware"
or
"Ammo cans....tupperware of the New Millennium"
OK, off to bed. Gotta be silly every now and then.

Some are locked in safes. Others are stored in employee purse lockers (8" tall by 12" wide and 12" deep, 10 high) that I bought from Emporium when they closed.

I've got two Rubbermaid 'Action Packer' plastic containers I keep my range stuff in. I bought them for about $10 each at Wal-Mart and they hold a myriad of stuff.
#1 holds: chest pouch with 200 rounds 7.62x39 on strippers, chest pouch (with 6x30 rnd AK mags, 2x5 rnd mags, 1x10 rnd mag, AK loader and AK/SKS sight device), 75rnd AK drum in pouch, bandoleer with 80 rnds 7.62x54R on strippers, small plastic box with 50 rnds 12 gauge, shotgun shell belt with 25 rnds plus two pouches on the belt (one pouch for 12 shotgun rounds(soon to add a second of these), and the other one is a double mag pouch), GI first aid pouch that holds 2xAR-7 mags, 2 Lorcin .22 mags, and 1 P32 10rnd mag, there's also a couple boxes of Hydra-shoks, a 550 rnd box of .22's, a bipod, a plastic clay thrower, two speedloaders for my .357, a 9mm mag loader, and some more stuff I can't recall in it.
#2 holds: range bag (with: 3 sets of eyes, earmuffs, two packs of foam ear plugs, staple gun, extra box of staples, ASP baton, handcuffs, OC spray, mini-mag light and knife), BagMaster soft pistol case (with: M-1911 and 6 mags, P-89DC with 4x15 rnd and 1x30 rnd mag, two boxes of 9mm Hydrashoks, two boxes of .45 Hydrashoks, and three boxes of 9mm range ammo).
As you can see, those boxes will hold a lot of stuff in one, easily transportable, waterproof, lockable, easily affordable place.

Costco sells large plastic stackable bins for $5 each. I have dozens of them and use them for garage organization, closets, etc. I keep unloaded mags in one of them in one of our closets that lock. I keep pistol mags in mag pouches that hold 8 and have velcro flaps over them. They lay side by side well. I don't have all that many mags, so this has worked for me so far. I keep loaded mags in the safe.
