i know there are powder burn rate charts, i have several. but is there such a thing as an energy (or gas volume) per grain chart?

I have never seen one.

You also have to consider that some powders are single based (no Nitro content), and some powders are double based (some Nitro content), and that doublebased powders have varying amounts of Nitro content. Not to mention the rarer triple based powders.

VihtaVuori has a chart in their reloading manuals showing the energy content/gram in joules for their powders. I`ve heard IMR extruded powder all have the same amount of energy/gr and rely on coatings and geometery to control burn and energy release. I can`t show anything to back that though.
I`d suspect if you called Hodgdon, Ramshot, or other powder company they could supply a similar chart to VihtaVuoris`.
