Cabela's appears to have a decent price on them. I've been shooting blackpowder since the 80's, but my previous experience with revolvers was exclusively with Remington pattern pieces. Since this will be exclusively a range toy, I'm looking at a .36 for the lower price per ball as compared to a .44.

Cabela's doesn't sell Ubertis, with the exception of the Walker. Everything else will be Pietta.

The Pietta '51 is a very fine piece of shootin iron very natural pointer.
20-25 grain with wad and a .375 ball and that revolver is gonna last you many many years. I am partial to Piettas the only Uberti I own is my Walker.

The 1849 Cabela's sells is also a Uberti. Have they stopped carrying it?

No, they still carry it.

There is a big difference in the shape of the grips between the Pietta and the Uberti. The Pietta is not authentic. For me, it makes the gun point high whereas the Uberti is just like the original (which is also the same shape as the Single Action Army 1872 Peacemaker) which is a natural fit. For plinking it doesn't really matter but I have to bend my wrist down to shoot a Pietta so I don't have any with their factory grips. Get the Uberti if you can. The Pietta is a good gun and of almost equal quality, just different in feel.

It was a good gun. I only sold it because I prefer the 1858 Remys to the Colt open-tops.

I have the '61 Uberti which is essentially the same gun. I started shooting percussions with an original '51 navy in 1963, and I am very fond of this one. I would assume the '51 would be equally good.

I also have the Uberti 1861 Navy. I use a pair of them from Taylors for SASS main match guns. They were great right out of the box - Shoot POA at 15 yds.

My very first "real gun" was a '61 Navy Uberti I got right out of high school in 1968. It's had a few thousans rounds put through it and is still as tight as when new. I used it for SASS matches with my Ruger Blackhawk in the "modern" category. I Bought a pair of ASM 44 "navies" in 1993 and never went back to the suppository shooters.
