I need help deciding which way to go on this issue. I have decided to add a shotgun to my small collection. I want it for home security and not for hunting and I'm not anxious to spend more than necessary as my real love is pistols. Can anybody make some suggestion as to Manuf. , action type ect. your help would be much appreciated. Thanks:confused:

Pump gun as they are reliable.

ANY OF THE BIG FOUR. (Right Dave?)

Remington 870
Mossberg 5 something
Ithica
Winchester 1300 Defender

But the Winchester Defender is the best? IMHO

HS/LD and I would recommend the Winchester 1300 Defender and Dave McC would recommend the Remington 870. Both are very good shotguns and can be had for about the same amount of $$$. I recommend reading this section some more since this question has been asked about 5 or 6 times in the past week or so. There is abundant information on the merits of each.

Actually around here 1300s go for quite a bit less than 870s or 590s. Not unusual to find them for 225 or so. Where the 870 really shines in the police trade-ins and that supply seems to be drying up. :(

Killjoy, I'd get a good stock 1300/5xx/870 and a bunch of ammo. Start with the cheap stuff from one of the "marts" and really get to know your shotgun.

And do a search here and www.thefiringline.com for lots (!!) of information.

I prefer the 870,but any of the Big Four will do.

Handle an example of each and get the one that FEELS best.

And mine the Archives,TFL is a marvelous resource...

Winchester 1300 Defender. The others can be considered...

...as a second shotgun that you can work on when you get bored with the Winchester's reliability.:neener:

(It's a good thing Dave doesn't know where I live.:D )

Killjoy,
anything from a single barrel to an all out "TACTICAL" shotgun will work for 'defender su casa '

I like the Mossberg, others preferences will vary.

Blades, run 8-10K shells through that 1300 and get back to me on how it went. Thanks...

Killjoy, having a shotgun for HD means having to shoot the thing. And shooting gets addictive, if there's ANY shotgun useage in the last 40 years that wasn't fun, I've managed to forget it. The good news there is that the more fun you're having the better you shoot.

Buy the shotgun of your choice, and as long as it's a Big Four pumpgun, nary a quibble will you hear from me.

Get a lesson or two from a qualified instructor, and use up ammo. Shoot clays, game, silohuettes, tin cans, landfill rats, whatever. A few K of shells down the road, you'll be deadly and having lots of fun. Enjoy!

And like Dave said, send lead down range!:D
Get used to your shotgun.
