"Who loves ya, Baby?"...The '70's Cop Show Guns of Choice.

Every Sunday on the Hallmark Channel, they run several of the '70's cop shows that I grew up with. As I was watching "Kojak", I started thinking, "What would I carry if I had to hunt criminals on the mean streets of NYC/Chicago/LA/Honolulu in the 1970's?"

Remember, this is the era when the revolver was king, hollowpoints were unreliable, and autos were limited in choices & reliability.

Here's my choices in guns & ammo...

HANDGUN: S&W Model 24 .44SPL in a shoulder holster. With a SWC load, it'll put a bad guy in a world of hurt quickly. If lucky, I'd get a Model 29 & have a dump pouch of .44Mag handy if the SHTF. My backup would be a .38SPL Chief's Special with a HBWC (loaded base forward, if possible) in a coat pocket.

RIFLE: In the city, something like a surplus M1 Carbine. The boys in "Hawaii 5-0" seem to use them to good effect. 15 rounds quick, and easy to carry. In the country, I'd go w/ the classic favorite--.30-30 Winchester.

SHOTGUN: Easy choice. Remington 870 or Ithaca 37.

What about y'all? What would you choose when it's time to "book 'em, Dano"?...

Probably would be a Model 19 or a Python, followed up by a good shotgun. Thrown an AR in for kicks- kinda like Hondo and his guys.

I'd have to go with the gear from SWAT:

.45 ACP Colt Government Model w/throat job in a shoulder rig.
.38 Chief's Special as backup on the ankle.
M16A1 or AR18 .223 rifle, but with more than the 1 twenty round magazine. :D
37mm Gas Gun
Remington or Ithaca police shotgun.

Though since I look more like Frank Cannon than Hondo Harrelson, I suppose I'd be stuck with a Chief's Special and a 1972 Lincoln Continental. :neener:

Carry the same weapon now that I did then, only the loads have changed

S&W model 27 3 1/2" bbl, in a Berns &Martin speed rig loaded with 145 grain Winchester Silver Tips

Colt Python in .357 Magnum with the 6" barrel, and a red 1975 Gran Torino. Give me a black turtleneck and a chocolate brown leather coat with wide lapels, and I'm set.

In N.Y.C. in the `70s you`d be most likely carrying a S&W Model 36 Square butt that you picked up at the NYPD Equipment Section for $65. Or if you prefer, a Colt D/S that sold for $97.50. They`d be loaded with 158 gr. SWC and later they`d be +Ps. Ithaca 37s with the sear disconnect were de riguer for stake outs. Double barrel (short, forget the make and exact barrel length) for easy concealment when you couldn`t sneak into a stakeout unobserved. Besides, Detectives could only count to two.:neener:

If you worked patrol in Brooklyn North you`d probably have a Colt 70 series:D or a BHP under your jacket but that was strictly unauthorized. :what: :D

Now if you were a private dick, you`d carry a Colt Gummint named Betsy and your name would be Mike Hammer.

Pre-70 Series Colt Government Model. Very reliable with hardball, which was the only choice anyway. Probably nickel plated.

1911 in .45acp
AR15 in .223
870 in 12ga

Sometimes, the classics never change.

Ah yes the suede leather blazer over the ribbed turtleneck, and flared jeans with no rear pockets to ease your slide across the hood.

Don't forget the zip boots. Sideburns, gotta have sideburns.

Colt Agent hung upside down on the right side 158 lswchp, Colt Commander 45 hung horizontal on the left side, 230 hardball.

You guys ever notice just how well dressed Clint Eastwood is in Dirty Harry? he's way to fashionable to be a cop, even a San Francisco cop.

Oh and I just remembered.. Shaft's Hi-Standard bull-pup shotgun. Gotta have that.

S & W 64 4" with the 158 gr SWC (i.e. "FBI load").

(kinda biased 'cause that's the revolver I own, though these days its Glaser +p or CorBon JHP +P) :D

Why a .45 ACP 1911, of course! Same as Dave Starsky!:D

For cary, I'll go with a 1911, same thing I'm carrying now, but with hardball I guess.

When things get tough, I'll go with the M1 Carbine or the Ithica pump.

Hey, don't forget Sam McCloud and his SA revolver. He did pretty good on those NY streets!:)

Sorry to burst your bubble, but this one has been discussed before.

Starsky's gun was an early S&W Model 39 9MM.

I was packing a Government .45 auto and that would still be my choice. Maybe backed up by a Cheif's special, with an Remmy 870 nearby. No doubt I'd have a Commander laying about.
Riflewise.......There was the AR-15, AR-180 and surplus M1 Carbines...loaded with soft points, any would do. But I might try to find one of those Valmet's from Finnland for my rifle.
But the .45, a 'jay' and a semiauto rifle(folding stock, please:D ) with soft points...box fed and very reliable..would be my choice then, as it is now!!
Some timeless classic's that still serve well.

I thought the left handed Starsky carried a S&W M59 while the right handed Hutch carried a 6" Colt Python?

Bluesbear it may have been a M59. I'm not up on my early S&W. Whichever one had the straight backstrap is the one it was. You are right about Hutch having a 6" blue Python.

The 59 has the straight backstrap and black grips and the 30 was arched with wooden grips.

I recall this show so vividly because my 60 year old Mother (of all people  ) watched it EVERY week. My mother would always remark that "Hutch has a gun just yours and Starsky has a gun just like you Dad had". At the time I just so happened to be carrying a 6" blued Python, but my late father's old semi-auto was an old Llama 9mm. She was also proud that her Colt Cobra was, "Just like the one McGarrett carries on Hawaii 5-0."

At least she close. ;)

I'd go w/ a 4" mod 19, shotgun & an AR in the trunk of my Mustang

The double barrel shotgun used by NYC Detective Squads were

Savage(Stevens) Model 311 with 18 inch barrel

I mentioned this thread to a buddy (who is not a member) who claims "the" 70's set up is TWO centennial airwieghts and a zippered leather scooter jacket.

I think he was watching Ian Ogilve's Return of the Saint or something.

Choice of equipment wouldn't matter much to me, as long as I could shoot as well as Frank Cannon, Barnaby Jones, Inspector Erskine, etc. And please, gotta have that ammo that blows up the bad guys' gas tanks, or at least violently blows out their tires!
