Upside:
synthetic stock is lighter
stock doesn't change with humidity
good muzzle brake
shorter/handier
you only lose 32-37 fps with the 18" barrel
(I don't use the scout mount, I've got the government model scope on the 3rd gen mount, the installation of which removes the clip guide for toploading via 5 round clips)

Downside:
The stock is milsurp refinished black with sucky paint that will flake off like mad
The barrel isn't chrome lined :cuss:

All things considered, I love the daylights out of it.

...a chrome lined barrel would have been nice, especially with an MSRP of $1,500...

Glad you like it - I'm gonna have to check them out up-close and personal...

Funny thing, I hadda fill out just as much paperwork as any other gun I've purchased :neener:

I bought mine this spring for $1,100 slightly used. I really like it.

I would suggest stopping by www.battlerifles.com they really know M1A's. Also there are some very good leads there on either traditional wood furniture or camoflaged. I really want to replace my black krinkle finished stock, but I also want an aimpoint, a marlin 41 mag lever action, a couple of new revolvers and a 1911 45 ACP. I really need to win the lottery.:)

When I was looking around for 308 rifles I just really liked the way the scout felt and handled.

In short, the fit and finish was short of what one would expect on a $1350 rifle. The major malfunction was a crooked muzzlebrake. I had all the bugs worked out so I could sell it with a clear conscience.

OTOH I am EXCESSIVELY picky with my guns since I'm a minimalist, I want to have just ONE carbine (ok and a duplicate) that I'm really happy with.

Most folks have better luck with them than I did. On the sunny side, SA's customer service has been VERY accomodating towards me and was willing to fix it for me every time I found something wrong with it. They WILL eventually fix the gun for you--if there is anything wrong with it in the first place.
