If hunting deer with a rifle, generally how much ammo do you bring? Just the loaded magazine, or do you also carry a box or two in your backpack?

I take a full box or two for keeping in the truck box. When I get out to the field I stick 3 to 5 or so in the mag but usually one round does what I'm after. The surplus in the truck are for my peace of mind and in case I have a hole in my pocket.

Besides, my brother is the forgetful one in my family. I check with him beforehand to see what he's going to bring to hunt with and make sure I provide for him as well....just because.

Sitting in a stand, only what's in the rifle.

Walking across country, probably a full box as spares. "Three shots means somebody's in trouble," is the main reason. (Although I once had a very patient, volunteering buck to hold still for eight misses before the "one-shot kill". :D:D:D He wasn't real close.)

I've never shot more than twice at an animal and really preach one shot kills. I just like to carry lots of ammo.

Four in the rifle and 10 in a belt carrier most of the time. I normally carry a few boxes in the truck also.

That is pretty standard, I had a bad experience a few years ago, used to only carry three rounds in the rifle. Used round 1 on a doe, dressed her and waited for my brothers who where hunting to shoot or come in. A huge hog walked by, I shot her twice, threw the bolt for the third and click. She was mortally hit, but sometimes they don't realize it, I caught her from behind and ended up killing her with a knife to the arteries in her neck. I never got a weight on her but with her hams touching the cab, her nose was laying on the tailgate of a longbed pick-up. I really figured I was gonna be the one mortally wounded by the time it was over. :D

I've been carrying six arrow bowhunting and leaving a rifle in the truck in case I have to follow up a hog. I had a little incident with one a couple weeks ago.:uhoh: :D

For squirrels, twenty or thirty .22's.

For turkeys I carry nine shells for the Mossberg pump, but usually three of them are 00 for "contingencies", like getting a chance at a coyote.

Deer...ten if rifle hunting and eighteen if carrying the Redhawk.

When I'm hog hunting on my lease I carry around 20 shells. You never know when you're going to get into a running gun battle with a whole herd. ;)

When I'm deer or elk hunting I tend to carry 10 on my side and a full compliment in the gun. When you're way up in the back country it's always better to have to many than not enough.

If Im packing in on horse I tend to carry 10 on my side and a full box of 20 in a saddle bag. Just in case. I never use em all but it's kinda like a security blanket. I just like having them.

Two years ago I pulled a shot on an elk and blew her front leg off. It took me the next 5 shots to simmer down and I finally hit and killed her on the 7th at about 370 yds.

I've said it before and I'll say it again the sun don't always shine on the same dogs butt. So bring enough ammo especially if you're a day or two walk from the truck!!:D

Deer/30-30 - mag full and maybe 10 extra in the back pack.
Turkey/12ga - 2 or 3 in the mag, one in the chamber, maybe the rest of a box of 10 inthe backpack. I don't expect to need all 10 but the extra weight in the 870's mag helps alleviate some of the felt recoil of those 3" turkey magnums.
If Michigan gets a Dove season for 2004 I'll probably take 75 or so into the field.

I carry 10 on my belt and a full magazine in the rifle. Sometimes I top off and direct chamber load the rifle, sometimes I don't. I usually have the better part of another box in the truck.

Bird hunting? Fill up a shell vest.. no idea how many shot shells that is but it's a BUNCH. Pistol as well.

Turkey hunting? A dozen or so shells. And a pistol.

Elk hunting? four in the mag, 4 in a spare mag. 24 rounds 44 magnum for my pistole. (that's 18 on my belt and 6 in the shooter) Extra box of rifle ammo in truck.

If I take my shotgun w/slugs? 5 in the shotgun, 5 in my pocket + handgun as above.

Antelope hunting: All the ammo you can carry. :D Plus more back at the hotel. Maybe a late night trip to the nearest wal-mart. Pistol of some sort, could be anything from a 44 mag to a Luger to a 380 knock-off.

When deer hunting, two times what the rifle's magazine holds is plenty, usually between eight and ten rounds.

When hunting in Africa, however, where you have several animals on your "shopping list," don't know what you'll run across, and may be away from the truck/camp/pack for the rest of the day when you set out for a stalk, twenty rounds on your person is a minimum, in my opinion.

For whitetails I bring two mag's for my model 88 (10 rds total).. Turkey I run about the same as the previous poster, 5 or 6 turkey loads + 2 00 buck "just in case".

New this year will be a 686 S&W with 6 in the gun + 2 speed loaders. This will be my "whatever" gun (signal / hunt / etc..) I'll probably downgrade to just one mag for the model 88 though.

I sight in a new box at the start of season. Whn in the woods, I carry 4 in the rifle and 4 more in a belt-carried ammo wallet and what's left stays in the box back in the PU.
Seldom (heck never) have I use up a whole box sighting in and/or actually shooting at deer in a season.

I've hunted very little, but I prefer to carry standard sidearm in addition to the rifle. Magazines and ammo being light, I don't see any reason not to carry a spare magazine (in case one gets damaged) and at least twenty rounds. Then again, I don't think I've ever gone out even walking in the wild with a rifle and less than 80 rounds (a Garand belt or a pouch with loose 7.62x54). We aren't talking about much weight and extra ammo could be handy if something weird occurs or plinking opportunity presents itself.

or do you also carry a box or two in your backpack? A box or two? I generally buy or load a few boxes each year more for target practice. HUnting doesn't take that much.

For deer I carry a little soft pack which has places for 10 rounds. In it I will keep five rounds for each of the two rifles I use for hunting. When I shoot a deer I put in a new round into the soft pack. This technique means that I won't grab the .243 rifle and .35 cartridges or vice versa. Considering my state has a 2 deer per day limit this is probably an excessive number.

OTOH, if I'm hunting in coyote or hog country I do carry a pistol with two full magazines.

groundhog?? 40 rnds of 22-250, i just grab 2 boxes by habbit, hardly ever use more then 10 or so, but with the extra shells, i can afford to strech REALLY long shots and miss a little, and the critters are so oblivious i can almost walk shots in if need be.

For deer, I fill the magazine in my Savage 99 and carry another 5 in a pocket. Can't remember the last time I used more than 1, though. When handgun hunting with a revolver, I fill the cylinder and carry a speedloader with another 6. When using the Contender, I usually carry 10 rounds. Since I hunt my own land, if I somehow ran out of ammunition, I can just walk back to camp and get more or over to the house and swipe some of Dad's. For bowhunting, I have four arrows on the bow.

Can load up to 1187 rounds but the standard load is 1150 rounds of
30 MM.

I usually have a full compliment in the hunting rifle and 10 extra rounds for deer.

When hunting hogs I usually have 20 extra.

Birds, as much as you can carry comfortably. Say 2 boxes for dove and quail.

I always have a sidearm on during hunting season. Got shot at once before and ran into a few suspect folks out in the wild.

Deer hunting - 10 rounds, half in the rifle, half in a pocket.

Bird hunting - 25-50 depending upon how far I'll be ranging from the truck. I'll usually have at least 3-4 extra boxes in my field bag, so that I can change loads if need be.

Rabbit and squirrel hunting... just grab a handful of .22 shells... kinda like M&Ms. Just make sure to clear out your pockets before they go through the laundry. :uhoh:
