Looking for help with "K" model 38 Special.

Serial # 38802.

Not sure the exact way to measure barrel so its 6 - 61/2".

Adjustable Rear Sight. I believe original holster. Grips were replaced by my father in the 60's to S&W Walnut checkered.

It is in fabulous condition. Some other markings, which with a little help I could figure out what they mean.

My father gave it to me and his father to him. Don't know where my Grandfather got it from but the story includes a Royal Canadian Mounty

Would like to know how old it is, approx value if possible and any other additional info. This gun will NEVER be sold and will continue to be handed down through the generations.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Serial # 38802

This is all that is on the bottom of the grip (that is where the s/n appears on older S&Ws)? No other letters or numbers?

Not sure the exact way to measure barrel so its 6 - 61/2"

From the front of the cylinder to the end of the muzzle.

approx value if possible and any other additional info

That would take a few detailed, clear photos to achieve. Based on your description, it could be a number of guns - a few pictures would really help, or you might check the instructions at the top of the "S&W DOB thread" at the top of the revolver forum.

Thanks for the quick post.

1. 38802 is all that is on the bottom of the metal frame. The "K" is located on the side below the barrel.

2. 6.5 I believe
3. I'll take pics and post this evening.

It is a very nice gun! Knowing my Grandfather it has probably had some sort of modifcation over the years.

Serial Number will be on the botom of the Butt...on the Cylinder Face...and under the Barrel where the Barrel has a flat area for the Ejector Rod to rest.

Barrel also should have nomenclature/patent dates...

If Serial Number on Butt has any Letter prefix, even if a letter is half an inch away from the numerals, be sure to include.

R.C.M.P. was all about .455 Eley and .45 LC via New Service Colts, far as I recall...but, ancillary stations may have had S & W .38s. and or private purchase options for additional or secondary, back-up arms.

Looking forward to images!

If "38802" is correct, with no letter-prefix, the Pistol would be a Model of 1902...made in 1902.
