Hey guys, first post, looks like a nice place you got here. Anyways, I just picked up a Winchester Model 12 this weekend and I did a complete take down to clean out the 80 year old crap that had built up in it. Anyways, I was putting the receiver back together and like a dolt put the extractor spring in then the bolt. Now the bolt appears to be completely stuck and I can't get it out. It has a slight bit of play to it but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get it out. Any help anyone can provide me would be much appreciated. Thanks.

have you tried moving the slide back, maybe half way. that bolt cams up when the slide is moved forward. keep looking at it, don't force anything, you will see how to do it eventually. then the trick will be to remember how you did it for next time. welcome to the board.

Thanks for the reply. The bolt is stuck in the back of the receiver. The barrel and slide have been removed.

When you say "... put the extractor spring in then the bolt.",
could you possibly mean that you put the ejector back into the frame then the bolt?
If so, see if the ejector is square and flush in it's recess. If it isn't, you'll need to make it so that it is. Then try and move the bolt forward.

Yes, ejector spring, sorry. As far as I can tell it is flush in the frame. I really wish I knew how I got it in there but it just slipped right in when I did it. Now it wont seem to budge. I can't pull it out and it won't slide forward. I think I'm just going to take it to a gunsmith this afternoon. Thanks for your help gentlemen.

Didn't seem to work. I may not be putting enough force into it but my thumbs are killing me so I don't think that's it. I'm posting on that board to see if maybe they can shed some more light on it.

Ok, I managed to get the bolt out of the stuck position by pounding the **** out of it with a flat head screwdriver and torque wrench (don't have a hammer, college student) but I broke off one of the tabs on the side of the bolt. If you're looking at the top of the bolt, it's the tab on the left side. It's very small and has a rounded shape. I reassembled the shotgun and cycled some shells through it and they cycled fine. Is this a huge problem or should the gun function ok?

EDIT: Just checked a diagram and it's the left hand extractor that broke. Like I said, it cycled 5 shells fine, but is this going to be a problem with actually shooting or should I be ok with just the right hand extractor?

If it just the left extractor, I guess you would need to fire the gun and see if just having the right extractor will be enough to extract a spent case and hold it enough to eject it. Well I lied, it's not cycling properly. I need to replace the extractor. Problem is the bolt won't come out to save my life. I think it's getting caught on the bent remnants of the extractor. This may seem like a dumb question, but would it be possible to spread the receiver and just pull the bolt out? I would hate to try and force it out and possibly destroy the grooves in the frame.

NO, don't try to spread the receiver. It is time to to take it to a smith.
