I've run across an unusual model 19. it is a 19-7 with a round butt, and a matt black finish. The finish is identical to that on the 442 J-frame. It also has the new, angled, cylinder release.

The shop owner told me that it is a special run, from the mid nineties, for the diplomatic security agency.

Anyone have one of these? Has anyone heard of such a 19?

If true, would this add considerable value to the 19 revolver?

Thanks! TJ

I know they put that finish and cylinder release on a "comp K" special release so it sounds possible.

Is it a good price?

diplomatic security agency. No mention of it in the Standard Catalog of S&W.

SO, if it doesn't come with a factory letter stating that is what it is, I would pay no more for it then a comparable used K-Comp Performance Center.
But I would also want to authenticate that unless it says Performance Center K-Comp or some such on it.

Could just be a re-finish somebody did, which would add no value at all.

Late 19's with parkarized finishes sounds vaguely familar to me, but I can't place it. I'll post here again if I can remember where I've seen or heard of one before.

Connecticut State Police had their issue revolver (Model 66) done with a finish called "Black Magic", maybe this is your finish?

This was a while back...since then they have used the Smith Model 39, Beretta 92, and the current issue (Sig 229 in .40), but perhaps this is the black finish on your gun?

Yes, I am aware of the K-comp. I wish it was! It would be a bargain. Asking is $525, with box and docs.

This is a 4" RB. I saw mention of a State Department order for 2.5" model 19's done in a matt black. Perhaps they did some 4" too? TJ

Yes, there was a special run of 19-7s that were ordered for the U.S. State Dept.'s Diplomatic Security Service in both 4"& 2 1/2" bbls.
Both had a matte finish and rd butts. The DSS didn't receive all the order, instead they started a transition program to autopistols, so the remainder of the 19s were sold to S&W stocking dealers and select distributors.
I have no idea how many were released to the public, but they are good sidearms. BTW, there was also a run of 4" 19-5s that were were delivered to the DSS w/ rd butts and a std blue finish....
Have no idea of the value, but to me, they would make an interesting keepsake.

I just mentioned the K Comp because it is the same color with the same cylinder release...so the precedent has been set.

I own one of the model 19-5s with 2.5 inch barrel and black matte finish. According to the SCSW it was the State Department Diplomatic Security Service issue sidearm for a number of years. Mine is unfired, and I bought it for $445 last fall. It appears identical to another 19-5 I have in the standard blue finish, except for the matte black. Here is a photo:

Guillermo - Thanks! I hope to find a K-comp someday. :)

pogo2 - With the exception of the barrel length and thumb latch, that appears to be it! The lettering on the barrel looks different too. It is in a slightly different......font if you will. Unlike my other 19's and 66's.

Perhaps I'll put this 19-7 in layaway. One can never have too many model 19's ;)

Thanks all! TJ
