mav 88 now or 590 lawaway?

Got a wild hare for a shotgun for the house. I have seen the maverick88 around locally for $199. But was also thinking about a 590 or 870p that I would put on lawaway... This would be strictly a HD gun after a few boxes to break it in. Kind of wanting to keep the cost down. Leaning tward the mav. Don't want to blow $500 on something that sits next to the bed if a mav will do the same job for less. What ya think??

870p on layaway. Can't go wrong with the 590, but I believe it's length is impractical in an enclosed space. It truly is a "combat shotgun". As for the Maverick...if cost means THAT much to you, go for it. But I'd wait and get 870p in 18.5

While the maverick is a good and functional gun, if you'd rather have one of the others then put one on layaway and wait. I've been learning not to impulse buy lately and if I wait a day or two I usually change my mind and am glad I waited and got what I really wanted.

I've purchased both 870's and 88's. For the money, the 88 is worth it. The 870 definitely has more of a "quality" feel.

You can't go wrong with any of them, if money is tight, get the 88, if you can afford the others, go for the 870 (as I can't recommend a gun I have not handled personally, such as the 590).

Proper training with a defensive shotgun will include working from both 'low ready' and 'indoor ready' positions. The best use of the defensive shotgun is from a barricaded position, and the length of the gun is immaterial in that case. Solitary "house clearing" when there is a chance that a genuine threat is present is pretty much an exercise in suicide.

IMHO. I find it interesting that people who have never had a solitary physical altercation in their lives with someone intent on doing them bodily harm could imagine themselves attempting to clear a home with a loaded weapon. If you must you must but life is too short to willingly predicate an altercation with persons of no conscense. Some of these people are professional predators.

I'll second the 88, got one at a local pawn shop for $100 a few months back it's well worth the money. With the exception of the synthetic furniture and the cross bolt safety on the trigger guard it IS a 500 in every other way.

I had the chance to compare mine with my dad's 500 sie by side and the machine tool marks in the bolt and receiver even matched.

If it is just going to sit under the bed or in the closet, doesn't matte much about fit and finish... It doesn't matter. They will all go bang when you need them to, just with different degrees of style :rolleyes:

BTW, If you can find a Westernfield 550, they're the same thing as a Mossberg 500 but at 88 prices (or cheaper. Mine was $125 and works flawlessly)

My Westernfield 550ab has the super sweet 500 safety, but had crappy feeling furniture (super cheap laminated wood. i turned the shoulder stock into a sawed off pistol grip due to.... idk why.)

I prefer the 870 but of your choices, the 590 is a fine HD gun

The Model 500 (12, 20, 20b, or .410) retails for $204.00
Do more shopping around.

Well, I personally am loving my 88. Nothing wrong with it. Every bit as reliable as my 870's.
