You have one round of .40 and one round of .357 SiG read on.....

You have two identical pistols in front of you, let's say a SiG P239.

One has a chambered round of .40S&W 165 grain Golden Sabre, the second a single chambered round of .357 SiG 125 grain Gold Dot.

An armed assailant comes at you with a knife, you only have time to grab one weapon and fire, each is equally easy to grab (hint - this is about the caliber).

Which do you choose, vote now.

Um, why not just ask which one is better, instead of coming up with a dopey hypothetical situation?

The one on the right.

Seriously, I doubt there's enough difference between the two rounds to matter much.

I really don't care which one I grab.

I'm confident that either will ruin an attacker's day as long as I'm able to hit him.

Grab both. Bad Guys usually come in matched sets. :D

0.400 inch hole vs 0.355 inch hole.

Are they labeled as to which caliber they are?

Otherwise it's like those Pepsi and Coke challenges in the 80s:

Bam! Wow...I like that .40S&W!

Sorry sir, but that was the .357 Sig!

If there is only one target shoot him/her with both.

Either one would, I trust, do the job.

I would go for the .357SIG because I shoot it a little better than
the .40S&W and I expect it will penetrate enough to do the job.

Statistically, the 357 Sig would be better.

The bullet would have hit the assailant a couple of inches farther out compared to the 40. Now how is that relevant?

Let's say the BG fell face forward, the knife still in a clenched fist and collapses in front of you in a stabbing motion. That extra inch may just be enough for you to escape serious injury. ;)

Now, beat that! :D:D:D

Trick question.
If there is only time to grab one of the pistols, then there is not enough time to grab one and shoot if you want to stay unperforated -- Tueller Drill time.
The answer is to grab any one if you can, but move out of the way, or use empty-handed techniques to block the knife assault.

So this round is already in the chamber?
Then the .40 of course.
Now, if the trick is that you have to count on that second shot... then it's the .357 for its edge in reliable feeding.

I'm not sure if this answers your question, but right now my home defense gun is loaded with .40 165gr Gold Dots :scrutiny:

Mushinto - I like your thinking.

I like velocity so I'd go with the .357 Sig, although I don't know if the 125 gr Gold Dot is made for the higher velocities of the Sig or the lower ones of the 9mm . . . so that raises bullet performance questions. At any rate, should penetrate well even if it breaks up.

But if I'm only getting 1 shot anyway give me a .50 AE with 325 gr Gold Dot from a contender :)

See Mushinto's reply.
Either would work for me, just do something other than stand there and be a target.

I'd choose the .45 on my hip! ;)
Who the hell walks around in a dangerous area unarmed? :scrutiny:

I seem to shoot 357SIG more accurately, so that's what I'd grab.

Well I'm right handed so the one on the right. I actually don't prefer one over the other. Would like to own both.

I'd choose the .357 Sig, but for a host of different reasons than defense. And now that I think of it, those reasons have nothing to do with defense, at least not of my physical person.

Shoot 'em with the .357sig, beat 'em the rest of the way to death with the .40. That way you don't have to worry about the .40 Kb!ing on you. :D

I'd grab the 357 sig first.

Grab either one, then sidestep to evade the knife attack... as the attacker passes, deliver a contact range shot to the head.
Getting the bullet to the right place is more important than which bullet. As long as I do my job, either one of those rounds should be able to do its job.

Neither...

I'll pull my Commander out of my right hand pocket and show him how to use a knife properly. :D

But my current sidearm is loaded with .40SW 165gr Gold Dots if that is any help.

Let us also remember that if the assailant is within 20 feet you don't have much of a chance of getting the weapon in time unless it is literally RIGHT in front of you.

357 SIG Gold Dot for sure.

Do you want me to shoot you with this here .40 or that there .357?

Then shoot him with the one he doesn't pick just to be mean about it.

An armed assailant comes at you with a knife,...
I maximize the distance between myself and my attacker, while I prepare to defend myself with my left hand/arm, while...
you only have time to grab one weapon and fire...
using my right hand to draw my Lightweight Colt Commander Enhanced from it's holster and shoot until he/she stops, drops and quits rolling.
(hint - this is about the caliber)
Yeah and mine punches a bigger hole. :neener:

I know the condition of my pistol (loaded, chambered, safeties, grip angle, etc) and am very familiar and comfortable in its usage.
Why would I grab a strange weapon?
