I was just looking over some threads concerning cleaning Garands. I see a lot of recommendations for using an Otis cleaning tool since this rifle must be cleaned from the muzzle when using a fixed cleaning rod.

I agree with the isea of using something that allows cleaning from the chamber end of the barrel, but what benefit does the Otis cleaning tool have over a boresnake?

My first Otis kit was so long ago , called Kit and Kaboodle. Boresnakes were not even thought of yet. Otis allows me to clean from .17 cal to 12 ga..Many, if not most often I don't use a brush, the boresnake 's brush is built in, and a pain to remove I've heard. I have no problem with boresnakes, it's just for me, my Otis has been paid for and for the price of two snakes-caliber specific, I have a broader range of caliber/gauges I can clean,with Otis. I also can remove obstructions-yes it works and I've don so on the range with students, with various calibers. Granted I don't clean bores often ( actually rare) as per Scheumann. Chambers yes. Friends with new guns, newbies to teach etc. I clean bores, my personal guns, I honestly could not tell you, when I last cleaned one...maybe a year ago on a CCW gun.

I've got Boresnakes for all my weapons. They're good(ish) for what they do.

I have an Otis deluxe kit and have been using it for about 4 years now, to clean everyting, I can even clean a .22lr revolver from the forcing cone with it.

I love mine, I make my own patches, buy the elcheapo 1.99 bag of patches at walmart, and simply cut a very small slot in the center with a pocket knife.

If you do get a patch stuck in the barrel (biggest complaint I have read, has happened to me twice when I used too much patch), twist the cable counter clockwise and the slotted jag will unscrew, then use a standard rod to push it back out the chamber.
