They're getting more popular. You know, the .50 BMG upper for the AR-15 rifles, that sorta thing... This is America - Folks are working at innovation, even in the face of conflicting laws...
There was a fellow at KCR who had a setup that would allow you to put a belt-fed upper (I think it was .308) onto a legally registered M11/9 lower. VERY cool. Turns a subgun into a crew-served weapon. Moderately expensive, but heck... And if you don't like being limited to a 20 round M14 or FAL magazine, our bud Arne is modifying some drum magazines to fit other rifles - A 75 round magazine hanging under a FAL really helps it stay on target.
