It's been a long time since I have posted here. I'm finally going to go and shoot this gun.

What I need to know is what is a good powder charge to start with?

Next question. What keeps the powder from falling out the nipple hole, during the loading process?

This is a Pietta (SP).

Any help would be appreciated.

Mike

Ok here you go.
What keeps the powder from falling out the nipple hole, during the loading process? You should be using 3f the grains are small but you should not get any falling out during the loading process.
What I need to know is what is a good powder charge to start with? A good powder charge for a colt in .44 cal personally I use 25-30 grains in mine I have a steel frame Pietta dont go over 30 grains maybe start at 20 and build a load for accuracy. Dont forget the wad over powder and make sure when seating the ball you get a lead ring that insures a good seal. Also make sure you have proper caps if they are a bit loose pinch them a little to make them fit better.

What Bob said above. I shot my Pietta 44 brasser last week with a 25gr load that was pretty accurate. I think a load over 30gr well start pushing the limits of the brass frame. YMMV

i usually fill mine to 24 grains. Flipping the flask over with my thumb over the bottom i open the spout then close it. instantly 24 grains. seems to work very well. my 1851 is one of my most accurate guns

I have vision problems and I use my 1851 to point and shoot. At 25 yards, you would be suprised at the accuracy you develope. The balance of the 1851 is superior to most pistols. I do shoot a 1860 that also has nice balance. Its an olv CVA kit gun
