Ruger SP-101 and S&W 60Pro. The Ruger is probably more rugged, but I prefer the adjustable sights of the 60Pro.

Okay, there is a 4" 617 in the picture... but it was shot to show the difference between the 617's Retro Target and the 696's Square Conversion grips, both non-fg style of cocobolo by Kim Ahrends.

http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u307/Stainz_2007/IMG_0951.jpg

I was talking to a fellow re the 696 in a store yesterday. I pointed to a new 4" 629 and eschued it's virtues over those of the 696, not the least of which was that the new 4" 629 was $750 - less than the last used 696 I saw. Oddly, I had bought my 696 new there six plus years earlier - for $439 - got an additional $10 off for buying a closeout priced new 296 then, too, at $349. I still haven't ever spent that much in one day at a gun store.

Don't re-mortgage the farm for a 696 - that 4" 629 is a lot more revolver for just six more ounces. The 296 or 396, even the new 396NG, at least is lite enough to CC. Still, since I sold my 3" 65 some years back, the 696 is my only current 3"-er.

April 26, 2009, 11:00 AM
The 696 looks like a great revolver but the prices can be :what:. And, frankly, who doesn't love an L frame, especially in a big bore? Then add that the price of .44 spl ammo is often more than .44 mag due to the .44 spl scarcity. Like the .41, if ya ain't reloadin' then best to steer clear. Now back the originally scheduled post of 3" revolvers...

Stainz
April 26, 2009, 03:02 PM
I called a friend a few years back when I saw a 696 no dash, LNIB, in the pusher's case for $350. It came with a box of ammo - missing five rounds! He got it for $350 OTD... such a deal!

Stainz

PS Don't tell me what a nice friend I am for finding him that deal... I have regretted it! Still, diligence will win you a great 3"-er... I'm awaiting my 629 3"-er...

1. Colt DSII .38 Spl.
2. Ruger SP101 .357 Mag. (actually 3 1/16")
3. Ruger SP101 9mm (actually 3 1/16")
4. Ruger Speed Six .38 Spl. (3" not 2 3/4")
5. S&W Model 64-5 .38 Spl.
6. S&W Model 65-7 Ladysmith .357 Mag.
7. S&W Model 60-15 Pro .357 Mag.
8. Taurus Model 85 .38 Spl.
9. Taurus Model 431 .44 Spl.

Can't beat this little Ruger Speed-Six 3-incher. It was born as a .38 Spc. and was rethroated to a .357 mag. It not only has a tight lockup, .004" B/C gap and a beautiful double action, the rethroating job was perfect, making it an exceptionally accurate pistola.

Yeah, it was worth every cent of the $138 I paid for it! Of course, I had to pay an extra $48 to get the chambers rethroated. No one wanted it because it was a .38 Spc. The .357s were going for $189, but you couldn't get them.

The Speed-Sixes were great because they were smaller and lighter than the new Ruger GP-100s, and they weren't as small and chiseled out of a block of steel like the 5-shot SP-101s, which never felt right to me!

I am totally clueless on how to work with digital photos, but wanted to mention I have a quite rare 3" GP100 with adjustable sights. The dealer indicated that a run of them were made a while back for some federal agency, and that the one I bought was from an over-run of those. I bought it in pristine pre-owned condition.

Also, I just picked up a 3-1/16" SP101 in .357 mag a few weeks ago.

Confederate, you brought back some memories, I was with an outfit called Southern Gun and we bought up most of Ruger's stock when the GP's were coming out mid-late 80's. I think we were blowing out the 38's at close to $100.00 toward the end on the Speed Six and about $15.00 more for the Security Six. I picked up my 3" Python for under $500.00, less than the 2 1/2" or 4" because they were just collecting dust. Wish I bought the other 5...

Weigand 4PJ / S&W 640 Centennial

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc177/DoubleAction77/Double%20Action%20Revolvers/Weigand1.jpg

This Weigand 4PJ Executive is built using a pre-MIM, pre- Clinton Lock, Stainless, S&W 640 Centennial in .38 Special. The 2 1/4 inch full under lug barrel, which is produced by Bill Jarvis of Hamilton Montana, is machined from a match quality stainless steel blank. The barrel also features a tuned Hypra-Port ( trademark) compensation system to reduce muzzle flip. The front sight is dove tail mounted with a tritium insert, which is also adjustable for windage.

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc177/DoubleAction77/Double%20Action%20Revolvers/Weigand01.jpg

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc177/DoubleAction77/Double%20Action%20Revolvers/WeigandPortsTop.jpg

The barrel’s extractor shroud also features a longer cutout to accommodate a longer extractor rod, normally found on guns with 3” or longer barrels, to ensure positive removal of spent cases. A ball lock is installed on the cylinder crane to prolong the enhanced fit of cylinder to frame.

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc177/DoubleAction77/Double%20Action%20Revolvers/WeigandCrane.jpg

The action job greatly smoothes the D/A pull and includes mating and polishing internal surfaces, removing machine marks left by the factory and utilizes stock springs for reliable ignition. The trigger face is rounded and polished to facilitate the double action only pull.

Excessive end shake is removed from the cylinder and head space is set to factory specs.

The front of the cylinder is beveled to ease reholstering and cylinder holes are chamfered to make speed loads easier.
