Lots, and lots, and lots of "human interest" style fluff, but an interesting scenario. Fed gov spending $200-$500K to hassle an admittedly odd family? Doesn't sound like either side is blameless, but I can't say I blame the family. I'd be hostile if some fed started hassling me.

Well, they're doing a great job so far. Government should grant their access road permits and leave these people alone. I'm envious of their lifestyle and innocense.

Blameless, no. Sure does look like one side is over-reacting significantly, though. They ran a bulldozer through a road that was already a road? Whoop de do. Let the stakeouts begin!

Anybody here remember The Milagro Beanfield War?

Honey and vinegar. These folks picked vinegar. The kicker is that they are not completely in the right. Should have done their research.

But you can sure bet the JBTs are going to do the wrong thing again and with great zeal.

They should leave these folks alone, plain and simple. Like them. :)

What disturbs me is the aggressive attitude displayed by NPS officials. Note that they apparently wanted to bring in a special ninja SWAT team but this was thankfully quashed by someone with a brain. They've now wasted far, far more money trying to attack this family than the entire two-bit roadway easement is worth! It's nonsense. They should have simply filed a complaint with the court system, gotten an injunction and had local troopers defuse the problem. Instead they once again behave as though the rules do not apply to them. Unfortunately, current law allows them to act as judge, jury and, well, you know.

This is just one more reason in the long, long list of reasons why the NPS should be ejected from Alaska. They are NOT good neighbors. I get the feeling they'd like it if everyone who actually lives here left for good so they could seal off the whole state.
