I am looking at a stainless M 60 S&W. There are three screws holding the side plate.

Two of the screws are dome head, the other is flat. With the muzzle pointed to the right, and the handle facing my belly, the screw closest to the hammer has a dome head. As is the screw closest to the muzzle. The sideplate screw closest to the trigger is flat.

The M 60 is used and has been into.

I understasnd that, although the sideplate screws look to be the same, they aren't. I kinda doubt that the screws have been repeadedly returned to their correct position.

If so, how can I tell which should go where?

Kuhnhausen has a schematic of the M 60 with part numbers, but no nomenclature for those parts. No help from Brownells...their schemantics and nomemclature information pertain to leaf spring revolvers, not coil mainspring.

Does anyone have any suggestion about a web site where I can order replacement parts?

The coil mainspring and, maybe, the trigger return spring have been replaced with aftermarket lighter springs.

I'd like to put std OEM power springs back in.

Thanks,

salty

The flat screw goes under the grip at about 9 oclock. There is a fitted screw that holds the crane on. Try both remaining screws until you find the correct one. You can order springs from wolf gunsprings.

That's Wolff springs right here - they've got standard or non standard springs, as you prefer...http://gunsprings.com/1ndex.html

Quick reliable service too.

As to your nomenclature problem, I'm pretty sure you can find it in Kuhnhuasen's book on S&W revolvers but since most of the names of parts are the same for all models you won't find them on every diagram or print throughout.

You can order parts for your Model 60 from Brownell's(new parts) and Gun Parts Corp.(Numrich Arms) for used parts. Gun Parts Corp has a parts schematic of this revolver in their catalog. Hope this information hlps you. :)

Salty, to tell which of the two domed screws is for the upper hammer position and which is the lower forward position do this:

Examine the tips of each. One will be burnished smooth because it has been riding against the yoke barrel when the cylinder has been opened/closed. It might also show signs of tool marks from when it was fit to that position.

It is usually plainly obvious which one is the cylinder screw from examination. They have the same p/n and start life identical; one just get's fit on initial installation and burnishes with use.
