Unless you're planning on shooting some SERIOUS 3-gun and then grab the barrel, I'd avoid it. Spend the money on ammo. If you just want your shotgun to look cool... buy something useful like a stock-mounted shell holder sleeve thingy.

BTW, it's Plastic... just in case you didn't know. MidwayUSA has some reviews here: http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=844818

honestly, and this is going to sound funny, the main reason i want it is because i have a Mossberg brand 870 replacement barrel and wat to cover it up lol. nothing against Mossberg, just looks weird on an 870. this particular gun is my hobby gun and goes against most of what i know and hold true about shotguns. its a total mall ninja project just for the sake of being a project. Plus it's 15 measly bucks, and to be honest I'm fairly stoked on ammo....I know for a fact the Mossberg brand ones are quality...wish they made one for the 870...

Hmmm, have you considered what this does to your sight picture? The heat shield actually sticks up above the receiver plane and, depending on your stock weld, partially obscures your bead. I stole this picture from another site and it's a ghost ring gun where that is immaterial, however you can see that it sticks above the receiver:
