Looks like most pistol and rifle primers from all manufacturers are taken off the website. I wonder why?

Just speculating here...

Probably because they cannot source them and got tired of answering the phone saying "no we don't have any".

Obama told them to stop selling them.

They are out of them and all primers are currently so far back-ordered that they decided to remove them from the website. They really do not know when more will arrive.

I think they had a pretty big backlog on orders anyway. They probably have a years worth sold already and none coming in...Why take more orders?

I don't know but you can bet rumors will be coming out the ass with this one. You think panic buying has been bad just wait till the stories about this one start flying.

Whew.... just made a big order a few days ago... called & was told, "no worries about needing to cancel". Snuck in under the wire. My guess is that bofe954 hit the nail on the head.

For awhile I was checking their site everyday to see if primers were in stock but no luck. So recently I placed a large backorder for just primers. It's pretty sad that I get all excited just to be on a backorder log.

Anybody know how long the backlog is? If you placed an order for primers from one of the major online (Cabelas, MidwayUSA, Powder Valley, etc) today, when would one expect the order to be filled?

It's not a good sign when Powder Valley removes primers from their site.

It's not a good sign when Powder Valley removes primers from their site.

I'd put that on the list with the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse. If powder valley can't get something related to reloading, you know the situation is bad! I saw the signs, heard the rumors from insiders, but never thought it would get this bad.

Midway and Powder Valley do not let you backorder primers anymore.

There are none available, nor are any expected to be available.

A friend ordered 30K primers from Powder Valley 2 weeks ago and was told 6-month wait.

I am waiting on 100K from an order in February.

So it sounds like they are still honoring backorders prior to the removal?

I'm a dealer, and I can't get any primers, any brand--haven't been able to for 3+ months. Same thing with most powders. Hodgden sent a letter to distributors (that supply dealers) about 2 months ago stating that they would be producing no 8# containers of any powder for at least 6 months. Seems like they are also not producing 1# containers either.
I CAN NOT PROVE THIS--but I believe the deal is thus: all these manufacturers have government contracts, big ones. I believe that the government has told them that if they want to keep their government contracts, then they must greatly curtail distribution to the public. "Our" governments new way to limit potential firepower of the public. Working pretty good, too!

Time will tell...I have several standing orders with PV but doubt that I'll be seeing any primers this year, maybe 2010 will be better.

On that point I would beg to differ.

Someone placing an order, that goes unfilled, is just so much paper. It does not -decrease- the supply.

What does decrease the supply is that wholesalers/retailers are NOT GETTING PRODUCT from the Manufacturers.

WHERE is it all going?

I've been trying to collect the necessary items to start reloading 45 colt. No retailer/wholesaler I have spoken to has any large pistol primiers, or power of any use to me, or lead cast bullets for that matter. Nor to ANY of them have any idea of when, or if, they will be getting any.

I did manage to order 500 255grain semiwad cutters for 45 Colt ... and was quoted a 6 - 8 week lead time. Maybe in two months some powder and primers will show up.

OK, this is getting crazy. What's it take to get into the primer-making biz? Supply & demand.... I just can't believe some enterprising company isn't interested in making serious $$$ by filling this demand. My god, there's obviously more than enough demand to just supply the public sector, forget gov't contracts.

I just called PV and was told that primers were taken off the web site because they don't have any to sell. As soon as some primers come in they will post them on the web site. I was told to keep an eye on the site.

I ordered primers from Cabelas on the 16th. Back then they said 1-2 week back order and I later got an email telling me they expected to get them on the 28th. I haven't heard boo since. I'm almost afraid to email them for an update.

A local reseller told me he talked to his Winchester rep not long ago to ask about primers and the rep told him they were backordered by 600,000,000 primers! That's 600 million! And that's just Winchester!

if you are making 4 million / day that is a 150 days worth of back ordered primers, and it is growing by the day.

So the way I uderstand it, not only are primers no longer available, but powder and bullets are also getting hard to come by? Heck, we can't even go back to flintlocks because of new laws concerning the sale of lead to "non-commercial individuals", at least here in Michigan. So basically, there is a shortage of all (or at least most) ammunition related products?

How do you figure that is a problem? Maybe he placed an order with a bunch of other guys to save on shipping. Or maybe he is a dealer.

In any case, what business is it of anyone to decide how many primers it is appropriate for someone else to buy?

Exactly. All of my primer orders are 50,000. I do a group buy with a couple of friends. You may as well make the best of the hazmat charge.

I know there is probably a lot of red tape involved in manufacturing all things haz mat, BUT, why doesn't some other company besides the big boys seize the opportunity and start making primers selling to civilians exclusively?

Parisite, it isn't as easy as getting licensed and opening your doors. There are a lot of logistics that need to be in place as well as raw materials that are now stressed as well.

Regarding Parisite's comment about the "big boys".

Remember the BIG boys were once little boys. Small business that turned into med. size corp. then were gobbled up by the huge corperations.

The fewer independent mfg. we have suppling us the worse off we are.

But hey IT'S BIG BUSINESS.

Sir, I ordered over 200K for a group buy for Ohioans for Concealed Carry; half the order arrived, we're waiting on the rest, and there's over 30 of us that ordered.

Where's that tongue-sticking-out smiley? There it is...:neener:

I placed an order for 10K large pistol primers from Widener's about 2 months ago (when they had them in stock). Had them in about 2weeks.

Glad I did. I'm worried though about next year. :fire:

I'm just hoping I can find ONE brick of large rifle primers at the gun show this weekend, then I'm pretty much set for loading my .308 rounds. I already have tons of stuff for my pistol rounds. I'm not paying $60/brick though, the highway robbery outfits can stick it.

You got a spare $50 or $100 million you want to invest?

Figure it will take 7 to 10 years to get all the government approvals, get the facilities designed and built, get the machinery and other equipment procured and installed, train the employees, and then start delivering product.

get the picture?

According to PV's website they have over 50,000,000 primers on backorder. Thats alot for one company to keep track of. They probably did it just to make there bookkeeping a little easier.

I have an order with PV, waiting for 8lbs. of IMR 4895, and 5k CCI #34 primers. No tellin' how long it's going to take.

But thank God I had the sense to buy a respectable amount of brass, powders, primers and bullets before the Election BS really got underway. I don't have supplies on the order of a lot of you, but it's a pretty good amount for a neophyte like me.

I can load ammo in 9 different calibers for months before I run out of anything. I can load up more than I'd ever shoot up. And still have brass left over.

I even bought up a couple buttloads of those white ammo boxes with the styrofoam inserts from Midway. And another buttload of USGI ammo cans.

I ordered primers and stuff from powder valley a few weeks ago and was told at that time not to worry about the web site not having primers listed for sale. They are getting supplies in daily and will fill the orders. They just are not filling them all at once like they used to. Order your stuff and start the waiting process. They told me that it would be a little while before I got my stuff but that they would get it in and ship it whithin a couple of months

Last January, I placed an order for a case (5000) of Federal Match small rifle primers and 2000 Federal Match large magnum rifle primers, along with a case of Lapua brass and two 8 lb. kegs of powder. But when it STILL hadn't been filled late last month, I started calling the manufacturers of the stuff. Kaltron-Pettibone (the EXCLUSIVE importer of Lapua products into the U.S.) had 'no comment' on when the Finns would be resupplying us, while a guy at Federal told me I'd be lucky to see my primers by the END of NEXT YEAR!!! :(

With that, I placed orders for over 5000 rounds of loaded ammunition (.223 Remington and .300 Win.Mag.) with three different vendors. And if I get it, it'll be the first time in more than 10 years that I've had to fire a single factory-loaded round through any of my rifles.

It looks like Grafs has removed primers from their site as well. A few weeks ago I ordered a 1000 each of a few different kinds of primers as well as some brass. They called me a couple of days ago and said they'd gotten Federal small pistol primers in, and wanted to know if I wanted 5,000 instead of 1,000 since I'd be paying the Hazmat fee. Naturally I said yes :)
