i have a remington No. 3 or No. 1 (i dont remeber which) rolling block rifle in .32 rimfire. needless to say its a bear to find good hard hitting ammo for. its a solid little rifle that is murder on groundhogs. but i was wondering if there is a way i could have a new breech block and hammer made so i could fire 32 smith and wesson short centerfire shells? i know the reciver and barrel would take the extra pressure. any help would really be ... er .. helpful.

I'm not 100% certain, but Dixie Gun Works MAY have replacement breech blocks for this gun that do this for you.

Sounds more like it might be a No.4, which is a small action and was made in .22 RF, .25 Stevens RF, and .32 short and long RF. Those are pretty strong little actions (way over engineered for the calibers they were made in) so conversion to .32 Long or even .32 H&R Magnum might not be impossible. Unless the gun is in very good condition, though, making a new breech block might cost more than the gun is worth. Of course, a new block would allow use of CF cartridges while still retaining the original block if the gun is ever sold.

If the gun is in so-so condition, an alteration is a better possibility and I would see if you can find a gunsmith who might be willing to tackle the job without charging an arm and two legs.

Essentially, it would require plugging and welding up the old firing pin hole, and drilling a new hole for use with a small diameter firing pin. I have done a few jobs like that and they worked out fine. The block is case hardened, but that is no big problem.

Getting old is terrible! I had a gunsmith in Montana convert a #4 in .32rf to .32 S&W Long. I only use(haven't shot it in 5 years) factory equivalent loads. It dotes on 98grain wad cutters. The man advertises in the back of Rifle magazine(wolf publication) with a picture of a single shot rifle. He charged $125 to looks like make a new breech block and firing pin, in 1986!

just got off the phone with dixie gun work's information line. the man told me they didnt carry any parts for a remington #4. at all. and that it would be hard to find a block and hammer to be re-machined to centerfire let alone one that is already done ...

guess im stuck

Gun Parts Corp lists this part, but says that it is currently sold out. Keep trying back.
