Hello, just got one of these in last week. The front handguard and top handguard have a kind of varnish/shelac on it and the buttstock didn't. Therefore lots of cosmo in buttstock not much on handguards. What kinda finish should it have? I am looking to get it nice looking again, so should it have just BLO or the shelac? BTW it was from SOG and looks to be in pretty good shape. Very small amount of pitting on 2 spots under barrel, and if you take off the triggerguard/magwell, there is some pitting on the magwell. Overall I'm happy.

BLO or tung oil is an appropriate finish. I'd strip the wood, lightly sand it to remove any burrs, and put on a couple coats of BLO or tung oil.

I don't think I've ever seen an as-issued Lee-Enfield (and I own 3, plus a refinished JC :)) with shellac or varnish on the stock.
