Hi Flip,
I have used red dots on my handguns in Action Shooting ---- the only advice I can offer is DO NOT get a cheap no name brand -- also be aware that the dot size can make a huge difference in longer range shooting , if the dot is bigger , it can cover too much of your target/game at ranges over 50 yards.

I agree. Get a good name brand or skip it all together.
I've had a Trijicon Reflex II sight since 2000. It's been on many different guns and always worked perfectly. Never needs a battery.
The triangular 'dot' has a nice sharp point which helps in long range shooting. The new Reflex III looks even better with the chevron dot.
Trijicon's Tri-Power is another with with the chevron if you like an enclosed tube.
The new Aimpoint Micro is nice and tiny, but should be a winner.

I've had a Nikon Monarch VSD on a .22 for awhile, and it's great. i have no idea how it would stand up to heavy stuff.
The variable-size dot solves a bunch of problems --- and it's the first dot sight I've had that doesn't shift when the reticule is switched.
