Value of noise in SD situation .....

This crops up quite a bit in threads - usually quite obliquely. But it has gotten me to thinking that at a critical moment, can a loud noise such as full bellow/shout be distractive and give just that edge you might need. Either to dive, draw, whatever. Depends I guess on whether BG has finger on trigger!!!!
Even in a tense but otherwise relatively quiet ''situation'' I think a degree of surpise could be achieved by a very loud utterance, or command even ... made as loud as possible and authoritative maybe too.
As ever, I muse on these SD things and am interested to know of both opinion and even experience.

If the bad guy's gun is pointed at you, you have a better chance of getting the upper hand if you make your move while the bad guy is talking. I think shouting will just encourage him to shoot you.

I would think a loud noise may help in some situations, but you also risk startling your attacker and scaring them into pulling the trigger before either of you are ready. Like everything else, it is situation dependent.
By the way, I too carry a P95 daily. My Glock 22 sits on the shelf most of the time. It is by far the most reliable pistol I have used. Which includes many manufacturers, and many popular more expensive firearms.

Anything that can distract is a good thing. I have heard that a whistle can stop deer in their tracks just wondering what it is.
What you've posted makes sense. A loud "HEY" could stop his thoughts long enough to get the drop on him.

Well gunshots are pretty loud. Would that work? :D
Im kinda surprised nobody else has said that.
I had been thinking that in a situation where you are caught with your pants down (figuratively) it might be a good idea to toss whatever you're holding at the BG. Not to throw it at him but just a light toss. It would be the natural response to shift attention to the object flying towards you and maybe even reflexively try to catch it.

Hmmm... hide around the edge of the door, wait until BG approaches, and blast an air-horn in his ear?
 :p :D

Welcome to THR, Brigrat! :)
Sorry, P95, I don't have any experience to offer. I remember that my Tae Kwon Do instructors stressed the importance of that loud, authoritative shout during a blow as you counterattack. If the BG's finger is off the trigger, though, I'd sure like to have Preacherman behind him.

I've rather wondered if a loud weapon, with lotsa muzzle blast, would be an advantage in a SD situation?
Seem to recall seeing security cam tapes of actual gunplay in various Quickee Marts. Seems that, often times, the sound/blast of the shot had a inhibiting effect on the BG. Perhaps a snubby .357 has an edge, in this way, over a 6" barrel 45 ACP?

Hey Badg' ......
I daresay a loud weapon could indeed have some ''sound shock'' effect ..... I am considering tho more than anything else ... the benefits or otherwise before any lead flies!!
''Winning'' that vital fraction of a second to enable an action for oneself, before BG is quite aware something is happening ..... a last ditch means to turn the tables i guess.

i wonder what the average burgler would do if harry homeowner
fired up ye olde Poulon chainsaw as he entered the back door.
Ya gotta figure your run of the mill burgler is not a Rhodes Scholar
and has prolly absorbed nearly every horror film out there
a set of roving red pig eyes and a whispered "get out"
would prolly be enough to make him look elsewhere for underwear money.

You have to understand that while distractions may work very well, something like a loud noise may garner a startle reflex on behalf of the bad guy. No doubt if you do manage to activate his startle reflex that you have created a distraction.
HOWEVER, IF HE HAS A GUN POINTED AT YOU AND HE GETS STARTLED, THE REFLEX VERY WELL MAY CAUSE THE TRIGGER TO BE DEPRESSED AND YOU TO BE SHOT.
The sad part would be that your attempt to distract via a loud noise may result in your unintentional demise.
There is very good reason why the good guys train to have their fingers outside the trigger guard. Startle reflex discharges are a very real problem and so proper gun training involves learning how to help prevent such discharges by NOT having one's finger on the trigger or inside the trigger guard. Most bad guys don't get proper gun training and aren't too concerned if they shoot somebody as they are going to be in YOUR home or YOUR neighborhood and not their own. So death of a victim or bystander isn't personally bothersome to them.

A command voiced with authority can be very effective. Police refer to their uniform and accountrements, stance, tone and volume as "command presence."
How you come across can help control the situation.
By the way, I too carry a P95 every day. It shoots where I point it, every time. That's a winner in my book.

DNS ........ oh yes indeed ... the untrained BG with finger on trigger ........ there we do have a real problem.
I'd guess that any decision as to whether to try the ''noise'' approach when BG is in that degree of ''readiness'' - will depend almost entirely on whether he has you or another totally covered. If perhaps he is ''between targets'' then the time buffer could well be enough to permit the noise approach.
As ever .. circumstances alter events .. no way we can theorize for every situation.

Mpayne - "shoots where I point it, every time" .. yep .... I find pretty much the same. I have to own up tho to having now ''upgraded'' to the P97 for full time carry ...... same feel ..... and still shoots good. Think I'd better amend my sig', unless I can ''tweak'' my usename!

I'm pretty sure the report of two .44 magnum warning shots being directed into the bad guy's center of mass would disorient him long enough for me to hide under the bed... or something like that.
