Ithica double barrel 16 GA. for $650.00. Is it worth buying?

How about a #60 Harrington 410?

Anybody know the value or woth, I think the seller wants $4-500 range

IIRC, Ithacas built prior to the New Ithaca Double model, ca 1926, are not recommended for shooting anything, per Ithaca.

Is that 410 a Harrington and Richardson? A H&R single may go as high as $100.

Where might one find the info on dating an old Ithica double barrel?

I just bought one and the guy swore was from the 1920s, has just a "tiny" bit of wiggle in the end of the barrel and receiver when its latched, but otherwise the barrels are real nice, and the entire gun is very nice also! Should I be concerned about that slight looseness when its latched??:uhoh::confused:
Also the barrel reads, "Smokeless powder barrel"

I'd like to have it here as a shooter for small game, traps, etc. without having to think twice about shooting it.... any help will be GREATLY appreciated!!:)

Giving an opinion here is like playing in a minefield.

First, my statement about any Ithaca doubles made prior to the New Ithaca Double still applies.

A checkout by a good smith is called for.

A couple simple checks may help here though.

Take off the forearm while the barrels are locked shut. Grab the barrels in one hand and the wrist of the stock in the other.

Twist. If there's movement, pass it by.

Then, reassemble.

Open the action and place a single layer of clear tape like Scotch tape across the breech covering the firing pins.

Close the action. If it locks shut on the tape, there's headspace issues.

And the Ring Test. Dismount the barrels fro0m the rest and hang them off your finger by the lug underneath. Tap the barrels with a non marring tool like a pencil. Any sound made should be a clear ring.

Buzzes and a dead thud mean the barrels are coming undone from each other. Pass it by if so.

I highly recomend the ring test, I use a small brass hammer.

I've passed on tons of old doubles that failed it.
