Just curious:evil:...but could a Rem 870 fire one of these. I've heard that they weren't meant for tubular mags because of the possiblities of premature eja...I mean activation.

It should fire from any 12 ga shotgun with 3" chamber.
The real question is, does it add anything to the combat effectiveness of US soldiers? I think the answer is "no" since US soldiers are not typically armed with a shotgun as primary weapon, and the current 40mm grenades used on M203 launchers have twice the range, a larger selection of ammo and wider blast & better anti-armor capabilities.
Think the whole idea of FRAG-12's is to be issued along with an AA-12 shotgun as a CQB and force multiplier package. Before you have 2 grenadiers and say 2 guys with shotguns, now you have 4 grenadiers, 2 of them armed with automatic (albeit low-powered) grenade lobbers.
I think its an interesting idea, but one that works better in a semi- or fully automatic shotgun platform, I feel.

The rounds were originally designed for cylinder bore but were redesigned to function in the Benelli M1014 USMC shotgun with the fixed modified choke. That shotgun also has a tubular magazine. The rounds have safety pins that keep the firing pin and detonator locked in the safe position as long as the tail fins are folded, so there would be no danger to firing them in any type of magazine.
Having fired live FRAG-12's from the AA-12 (modified magazine for the 3" shells) I can say it's scary as all hell!
