I know that this is going to sound odd, but can anyone give me a good reason why the eight-shot 627PC in .357 wouldn't be a good choice for a home defense gun? Please hear me out....on one hand, you have the undeniable reliability of a revolver, coupled with near pistol mag capacity (unless of course you have hi-caps). To me, that sounds like a pretty good set-up. Am I the only one who sees it this way???

Absolutely; just as good as any revolver for HD (which is to say, the best thing short of a scattergun), only 33% moreso. Pick your HD load and load'em up.

If you're gonna put them in the moonclips (you need not), then you will face some restrictions on brass. Starline, Speer, Federal, and RP (Remington) of all incarnations work fine; Winchester and a couple of off-brands don't. You could shoot them without the clips, though.

I've frankly tried to find a good reason to buy one of these; it's such a cool idea, I think. If there were an ICORE league within a hundred miles, I'd already have one. As many have commented, in this age of K & L frames, the N-frame seems a touch of overkill for .357--if it's just 6 of them. But 8? That's plent of reason for a big gun, and a 5" barrel is enough to make them all count.

I still think six rounds of .357 is not a bad thing. The eight shot N frames can only be better.

The ONLY "problem" with using them in this role is price :).

You can get two GP100s for less money, and be better armed when you make one a shorter-barreled fixed-sight and one the 6". Or make the smaller one an SP or other small packin' gun.

But I can say the same thing about a Python, or any number of other hi-bux critters (including custom 1911s).

If you want to spend the money, and you get a PC 8-shot with a good trigger (I've seen one that REALLY sucked!) then by all means go for it.

The S&W 627 PC should be fine for home defense. The DA action is the outstanding. It is the easiest revolver to shoot tight groups in DA mode I've ever tried.

You might want to replace the front sight with a tritium night sight.

Ah, I should have thought of that before. With careful shopping, you could get two good used Smith, Ruger, or Colt .357's. Or one good one, and more training & ammo.... Of course, the three PC .357's I've handled have all been pretty nice, and I still like the idea of eight rounds. Possibilities...

I have the 627 PC but keep the 686+ in the nightstand when I am in bed. Reason? I don't want an expensive 627 rotting and abused in the PD evidence locker if I need to use it for self defense. I am thinking about going to the M66 when I get it set up for moonclips as the 686+ was my first handgun and I am the sentimental type.
